Prom is seen as a right of passage for many high schoolers. The night is usually full of beautiful dresses, dapper tuxedos, and special times with good friends. However, not every high schooler has gotten the chance to experience that special occasion. Take Helen Danis for example, the grandmother of Rhode Island never got to go to her high school prom. But today she may have a second chance.
Helen Danis knows the value of hard work. The 97-year-old grandmother from West Warwick, Rhode Island grew up in the Great Depression and experienced some of the same hardships that many Americans knew all too well in that era. With money scarce and an admitted outsider, Helen was unable to attend her prom when she was in high school.

As time went on, Helen’s life changed drastically. Now almost 100 years old, Helen is seeking to accomplish as many things on her bucket list as possible. One of the biggest things on her bucket list was to attend a high school prom. Julie Huddon, Helen’s granddaughter, has been helping her grandmother with her bucket list items.
Julie told NBC 10 News that she is making it her mission to have all her grandmother's dreams come true, including going to prom. Julie created a promposal for grandmother saying, "I got a crown for her and wrote her a note, asking her to be my date to prom." Julie said her grandmother had mentioned a few times about not being able to go to prom. Knowing that attending a prom would be a huge check off her grandmother’s bucket list.
Julie approached the administration of her son's school, Pilgrim High School, and received permission to attend the school’s prom with her grandmother, Helen. After a cute promposal Julie and Helen headed off to the dance. Helen looked beautiful in a lavender dress and exquisite tiara, eventually being named Honorary Prom Queen by attendees.
Helen also impressed the high school teens with her dance skills. The grandmother spent much of the evening wearing her crown proudly and even showed her moves by dancing the “Hully Gully."
