Zury, who is originally from Tampico, Mexico, is no stranger to winning competitions. But when she competed against and won a challenge with nearly 900 other children from 35 different nations, she could claim her first international win.

The children in this competition are all trained in the ALOHA method. This stands for Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic and is used to teach children 5-13 focus and memory.

After her win, Zury spoke to Upworthy alongside her parents. She talked about her love for math and her willingness to sacrifice to compete in what she loves. Her parents expressed their great pride in her efforts and are humbled by all of her supporters. Traveling around the globe to compete was a team effort.

Zury arrived home on July 24 and was welcomed at the airport by both her friends and family. They all chanted her name as she displayed both her trophy and a huge smile.

The title of "Grand Champion" in these ALOHA competitions is given to any child who completes a set of 70 problems in 5 minutes or under.

Zury, who is in 6th grade, and another Champion ALOHA mathematician were given the opportunity to meet Presidente Municipal Alma Laura Amparán Cruz, who took the time to praise both girls on their impressive mathematical accomplishments.

The very first ALOHA school was opened in Malaysia, in the town of Ipoh, in 1993.

The concept and school quickly gained ground around the world and has been successful in not only encouraging children that they are capable of doing the math but also at the same time empowers them to solve analytical problems with not only speed but to do so correctly.

Will you think of Zury and her amazing math skills next time you are using your fingers to do simple math? Have you or someone you know been trained the ALOHA Method? Tag a friend and leave a comment.
