7 Ways Spending Time Alone Builds Your Personality

Jun 03, 2018 by apost team

John Donne pointed out the truth when he wrote the phrase, “No man is an island.” We crave companionship. Solitude is unfamiliar. However, there are benefits in spending time alone, which are listed below!

1. Self-focused reflection

When you’re alone, be introspective and discover what is important to you. How well do you truly know yourself? What do you like and dislike? Are you true to yourself, or do you take on the opinions of others? Solitude is an invitation for self-discovery.

2. Less structure

Your schedule is entirely yours when you are on your own. You don’t have to plan around someone else’s availability. You also gain clarity on what your responsibilities are. If you make a mess, there’s no one else who contributed to the mess, and no one else will clean it up. Likewise, you’re responsible for only your own messes and nobody else’s. Often, this is a lesson we fail to learn because we are so seldom alone.

3. More freedom

When you are with someone you love, you’re considerate of him or her; this is a much-appreciated trait! When you’re going solo, complete freedom of choice is yours. It can be as simple as checking out the new restaurant down the street or as complex as pursuing a new career. You’re free to do what is right for you.

4. Room for exploration

As you’re finding your groove as an individual, you’ll want to search out new things and refine your tastes and style. Traveling is much easier because you are in charge of your destination. Being alone can give you a reason to go out and socialize with new people. Maybe you’d like to try skydiving or color your hair purple. Go for it! There’s no one holding you back.

5. Self-discipline

The freedom that being alone offers will allow you to encounter times when you’ll need to have self-discipline. No one will wake you up for work in the morning or pay your bills in the evening. Use this opportunity to build the muscles of self-discipline.

6. More time

Being alone frees up time. Whether it’s because you don’t have to wait for your partner to come home or because there is less laundry to do, you’ll uncover extra time to spend on the things you find important.

7. Setting priorities

From childhood on, we’re taught that being selfish is a bad thing, and that is true. However, as you are in this season of being alone, it is the perfect time to put yourself first. Give yourself a treat like a movie or a massage. Refuel and refresh yourself so that when the right time comes, you can give another person in your life top priority.

Sometimes we overfill our time with activities and people. These are just 7 rewards found in spending time alone, and you’ll find that solitude is a precious part of life.
