Jul 11, 2018 by apost team

We put a lot of strain on our eyes from the day to day wear and tear. It doesn't help that most of us stare at screens all day and night, either. Optometrists have shared 7 habits you need to ditch if you don't want to wear glasses.

1. Skipping Vegetables

We've all heard that carrots help you see better, but it's more complex than that. Any food rich in vitamin A, vitamin c, lutein, and beta carotene will help protect your eyes. Foods that you should try to incorporate more of into your daily menu include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, butternut squash for beta carotene; spinach, kale, squash, and other leafy greens for lutein; and meat, eggs, butter, and milk for vitamin A; bell peppers, kale, strawberries, broccoli, cantaloupe and citrus fruits for vitamin C.

This habit is especially harmful for anyone whose job requires them to work on a computer all day. In order to avoid soreness and strain, try your best to take a 5-minute break from the screen every hour you work.

3. Not Exercising Your Eyes

Did you know that there are actual exercises for your eyeballs? It sounds crazy, but exercising your eyes can prevent strain and keep your vision healthy. If you're interested in adopting a new workout routine for your eyes, check out these simple exercises from Dr. Zhdanov. It's recommended that you run through each exercise 3 times in a row, blink for a few moments, then move on to the next exercise.

4. Not Getting Enough Shut Eye

Sleep is when your entire body, including your eyes, undergoes some well-needed maintenance. There's a reason why your eyes feel incredibly awful after waking up from only a few hours of sleep. While everyone should strive for 8 hours each night, try to never dip below 5.

5. Smoking

There are hundreds of reasons why you should quit smoking, but saving your eyes is a big reason. Did you know that smokers are 4 times more likely to go blind? Smokers also have twice as much risk of developing cataracts and women who smoke while pregnant can make their baby go blind, cross-eyed, or develop a myriad of other health problems.

6. Not Wearing Sunglasses

Our moms always told us to never look into the sun, and for good reason, too! The cells in our eyes are incredibly sensitive and looking directly into sunlight can cause some serious damage. Don't think you're safe if you keep your head down. Just being outside in daylight without sunglasses can cause harm. Don't risk your health by forgetting to wear sunglasses whenever you go out.

7. Being Afraid Of The Dark

There is an ever-pervasive myth that reading, working, or watching television in the dark will damage your eyes. Although there is some logic behind this myth, doctors assure us that doing these activities in the dark is no different from doing it during the day.

Were you surprised by any of these facts? Be sure to spread the news to your friends to let them know how to protect their eyes.
