6 Beauty Tips That Will Transform Your Hair And Save Money
Oct 16, 2018 by apost team
From biblical references of hair being a woman’s crowning glory and different hairstyles being symbolic of women empowerment and self-esteem, it’s no wonder that the hair and beauty industry is a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
As part of your public appearance and private sense of self, you likely have a deep personal relationship with your hair, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the extra cash to routinely get pampered by hair care specialists like you’re a Real Housewife cast member.
Most of us have to also learn how to take care of hair day-to-day at home.
According to the Huffington Post, women spend approximately 50,000 on their hair in a lifetime. Not everyone can do this, however, and it doesn’t really take a huge budget to keep your hair in tip-top shape.
There’s a lot of information on healthy hair out there, and it can be easy to get wrapped up in the myths and cut off by the misinformation in hair care tips. So, let’s explore what you really need to know to have healthy, beautiful hair.

1. How To Manage Curly Hair Woes
Curly hair can be quite challenging and hard to manage. There’s a plethora of name brand, expensive products on the market to tame unruly curly locks, but all you really need are some basic ingredients.
Gelatin mask to laminate your hair:
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp hair balm
- 1 tsp of gelatin powder
- 3 tbsp mineral water
- 1 egg yolk
Method:
- Heat the mineral water for a few minutes in the microwave or on the stovetop. It’s okay to use tap water if that’s all you have on-hand.
- Mix the gelatin powder and mineral water together until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
- Add a tsp of hair balm
- Allow to cool and add one egg yolk.
- Starting about an inch from the scalp, evenly apply the mixture to your hair.
- Cover with a shower cap and towel.
- Leave in place 40 minutes for smoother, shinier, and more manageable hair.
2. How To Brush Your Hair 101
Hairbrush selection is a huge part of hair health, especially if you’re styling your hair daily. Here are a few hair brush tips to remember:
- Never brush wet hair as it can damage and pull out your hair.
- Use a wide-tooth comb for damp hair and be careful with knots and tangles.
- Use a massaging brush for dry hair, which will also help to stimulate the hair follicles.
- Separate your hair into horizontal sections and work your way up from the bottom with your comb or brush.
- Brush near the scalp so that natural sebum on the skin is spread to the hair for shine and luster.
- If your hair is prone to tangles, avoid densely-packed boar brushes. Go with a paddle brush.
3. Get Your Locks Growing Quick With An Egg Mask
Like your hair, eggs mostly consist of amino acids and proteins. Egg yolk simultaneously makes the hair as soft as it is strong. It also stimulates hair growth and lessens breakage. Combine the power of egg with some softening honey and hair growth stimulating castor oil, and you have a mask to kickstart your hair health.
Ingredients:
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tbsp of honey
- 2 tbsp castor oil
Method:
- Thoroughly mix ingredients.
- Apply to hair and massage into roots.
- Apply a shower cap or plastic wrap.
- Leave in place for a couple of hours before rinsing and washing as usual.
- Repeat twice a week.
4. Say Goodbye To Dry Ends
If you have split ends, you should go with the gelatin mask, but, for ends that are just dry, this will do the trick.
Simply apply some balm to the tips of your hair right before your bath or shower. Wash your hair as per usual.
The balm will help protect the dried ends from the aggressive drying action of the shampoo. You can also try conditioning before washing your hair to give your hair a layer of protection against the drying impact of shampoo.
5. Make A Batch Of Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo can be a real time saving product and it adds some nice volume. Commercial dry shampoos often have multiple unnecessary chemicals and can be quite expensive. So, make your own dry shampoo.
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- A wide makeup brush
- A few drops of your favorite essential oil for smell.
- Application bottle
- Brush
- Hairdryer
- For dark hair only - 2 tbsp cacao powder
Method:
Mix all ingredients well and place in spray bottles
Use a makeup brush to paint the mixture on the hair roots and leave for a couple of minutes.
Brush mixture down from roots to tips.
Use a hairdryer to remove the loose dry shampoo.
6. Getting Rid Of Dandruff
You may know aspirin as a lifesaver for heart attack and strokes, but did you know it’s also a lifesaver for your hair? Aspirin has salicylic acid, which is a common ingredient in expensive anti-dandruff shampoos.
Take several aspirins and crush them to make a powder. Mix the powder in with your shampoo to transform it into anti-dandruff shampoo. For a deep treatment, melt a couple of aspirin in hot water and massage into your scalp, leave for 10 minutes, and wash as usual.
Hair Hype Myths
You’ll see a lot of fads and myths when it comes to hair health and beauty. The old wives tale that pregnant women can’t dye their hair is a great example. The concern originated from inhaling ammonia, which many hair dyes don’t have now and which a well-ventilated room moots the risk.
Here are four more myths that don’t hold weight in hair health science.
Myth 1: Routine and frequent haircuts make your hair grow faster.
Fact 1: Hair growth depends on the follicles, not the ends. Trimming ends simply makes the hair appear healthier because ends tend to fray, split, and thin.
If you want hair growth, then infuse your follicle with stimulating massage, vitamin-packed masks, and oils, and adhere to a vitamin-rich diet.
Myth 2: Always wash your hair before going to the salon.
Fact 2: Washing your hair before going to your stylist actually prevents him/her from seeing and feeling your hair’s natural texture, flaws, consistency, shape, and type.
It also can make hair coloring painful if you happen to scratch your scalp too hard during washing.
Professional hair stylists recommend to come in with hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or so - not too dirty and not recently washed or wet.
Myth 3: You need professional products to keep your hair healthy.
Fact 3: Price and brand mean nothing if you haven’t selected the right product for your hair type and need. There are plenty of fantastic professional products, but there are just as many cheaper alternatives to the professional labels that do the same job.
The main thing to remember is to carefully look at any label to ensure that the product doesn’t contain unhealthy hair chemicals like paraben and phthalate.
Myth 4: Daily hair washing weakens your hair.
Fact 4: This has been debated since before shampoo was even invented. Washing your hair daily removes the natural oils that keep it from being dry, dull, and brittle. How often is too often?
According to Elizabeth Hughes, a Seattle-based integrative dermatologist, you should wash your hair when it begins to feel oily and unclean to the touch.
Try to use a milder shampoo that doesn’t disturb the natural oils if you like to wash your hair often. Also, keep in mind that damaged hair isn’t just a cause and effect of washing. It can be that your blow dry your hair too often, too close in contact, or with too much heat or that you brush it too hard and too often.
