5 Reasons Why Children Don’t Listen To Their Parents

Apr 09, 2018 by apost team

Communication between parents and children is key to having a healthy relationship, according to the American Psychological Association. Every parent wants to be closer to their children, and it is important to know the dos and don’ts of conversation. If you follow these tips, you will find it easier to relate to your children and they will be more likely to listen to you.

Here are some things to avoid when talking with kids:

1. Going on for too long

Keep your child’s age in mind when talking with them. Overly complex thoughts will go over the heads of young children. They can only retain so much information at a time. If you take the time to think about what you’re going to say and do it directly, without babbling, you’ll see how much easier it is to communicate with your children.

2. Yelling and cursing

A recent study published in “Child Development” states that children who experienced “strong verbal discipline” from parents were harmed emotionally. It’s important that parents rein in their temper when talking with their children.

3. Not listening

Parents are often distracted by work, household chores, or electronic devices. Children are often left wondering whether their parent cares enough to listen to them. Ignoring a child will only damage your bond with them. Instead of dismissing them or ignoring them, try calmly telling your children that you have to concentrate on your task for a little while but then you will be able to listen.

4. Dismissing their thoughts and emotions

Parents may feel the need to correct a child’s way of thinking or shut down conversations that are rude or disrespectful. Cutting off the lines of communication can damage your relationship with your child. Showing empathy for their situation is a better way to go.

Don’t dismiss their opinions, and always ask why if a child refuses to do something. Finding out what is really on their mind is a better plan than bowling over their feelings.

5. Never having real conversations

It seems like most of the time, when we talk to our children, there are things we want and need. Parents need to remember to have real talks with their children, about matters that are important to them. The time before bed is a great time to have these talks, when there are no other distractions.
