In 2013, a choir named Little Singers of Armenia performed their rendition of Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.

The Sound of Music is a classic musical, written by Rogers and Hammerstein, first performed live on-stage, then as a movie, which became a classic. It follows the story of Maria, a nun, who takes a job as governess for Captain von Trapp, caring for von Trapp's children. It tells the story of how Maria came into the family, as well as how the family fled Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938. The musical is based on the memoir of Maria von Trap called The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

Edelweiss

Edelweiss is a song in the musical, named after a white flower that grows in the Alps. It is an ode to Austria, the homeland of the von Trapps. The song is a sad, beautiful, hopeful one that expresses both heartaches for the past and hope for the future. In the film, we first hear the song when Captain von Trapp sings it in front of his children.

It is a moment that softens the Captain's character through the love of music and helps him reconnect to his children after the loss of their mother. The entire family sings it once more, this time in a public performance immediately preceding their fleeing Austria to escape the Nazis, who have appointed Captain von Trapp to join their Navy.

The Little Singers of Armenia Sing Edelweiss

The song is beautiful on its own, but The Little Singers of Armenia choir makes it sound absolutely ethereal. Their voices take this moving song and turn it into a masterpiece with their melodious take on the classic. The song starts out slow and the children stand perfectly still. As the song continues, they slowly start swinging and swaying back-and-forth as they sing.

he song echoes this movement and escalates with the younger girls taking a back seat to the older girls. Their voices are deeper and add a richness to the music, setting the emotional tone of the piece. It is an exquisite interpretation of the song, conveying the emotion of the original piece that shows maturity beyond the age of the girls performing it. The performance of the song echoes the same hope we experience while watching the musical.

Who Are the Little Singers of Armenia?

According to their website, The Little Singers of Armenia is a musical group featuring 40 girls between the ages of eight and 18-years-old. One of the girls is a soloist and doesn't perform in Edelweiss, leaving 39 girls to perform the piece.

The group was founded in 1992 and is directed by the original founder, Tigran Hekekyan. The Little Singers perform worldwide and boast an extensive repertoire, featuring music varying from classical and jazz to sacred and medieval pieces. They have recorded numerous albums and have won many awards for their exquisite performances.

Bless My Homeland Forever

The song is a reminder of World War II and how it reshaped the world. Patriots were forced to either join the Nazis and adopt their regime or flee the only home that they knew. It was a story that took place over much of Europe.

Unfortunately, many people didn't have the means of escape. It is a poignant reminder that we should take in each moment living in our homeland. No place is perfect, but that doesn't mean we don't love it and wish it the best.

The Little Singers of Armenia give life to Edelweiss and make it all the more memorable for us. Their haunting performance is both a sad and hopeful reminder of the past and gives us hope for the future. If you enjoyed this performance, be sure to pass it along.
