From makeup, hairstyles, clothes, and accessories, women have a lot of looks at their discretion, and this includes an array of hair colors. According to Madison Reed, less than 10 percent of women dyed their hair prior to 1950 and some 75 percent currently use hair dye.
While it’s nice to see gorgeous hair color in the mirror, a lot of the treatments are very damaging to your hair. We invite you to try out some fresh and all natural herbal-based approaches to altering your hair color.

Achieve stronger and shimmering hair with a lighter chocolate brown tint using coffee grounds. You’ll need a couple tbsps of used coffee grounds, one cup of coffee chilled, and about eight ounces of leave-in conditioner.
Method:
- Mix the three ingredients, apply to dry hair, wait an hour, and then wash using your normal shampoo process. Repeat until the desired result is achieved.
- Add cocoa, blackberries, or St. John’s Wort for a burgundy hue. Adecoction of spruce bark or acorn shells can achieve a dark, deep hue.
Tips:
- Follow up with castor oil to give hair more density.
- Take five minutes each day to brush your hair in open air to improve structure.
- Keep in mind that how long you leave treatments on will affect the intensity of your color.
2. Your Hair Is Brown

If you want a deep hue with shine, then you’ll need dried sage and rosemary. For shoulder-length hair, use about six tbsps of sage and two tbsps of rosemary. Adjust the amounts based on the length of your hair.
Method:
- Add the ingredients to boiling water and gently boil for four minutes. Turn the heat down to low and allow the mixture to brew for an hour. Allow to cool before saturating your hair. Repeat until you have the desired hue.
- Black tea can be added to the mixture for a deeper hue. Use chamomile instead of rosemary for a more golden hue. Walnut shells can be added for deeper tones, and lime tree leaves and twigs can create a more dark chocolate hue.
Tips:
- Use any of the above mixtures in a spray bottle for dry, brittle hair.
- Keep in mind that natural dyes will only change your hair one to two shades in color.
3. Your Hair Is Blonde

Hair breakage, brittleness, dryness, and dullness are common side effects from bleaching and lightening products. Preserve your hair’s health by using three tbsps honey, the juice of one lemon, and four tbsps chamomile flowers.
Method:
- Begin by boiling the chamomile over low heat for 30 minutes. Add lemon juice and honey, and allow the mixture to cool. Place the mixture on your hair, cover with a plastic bag and towel, and allow to sit for 30 minutes. Wash with water and condition as normal.
- Add rhubarb powder for a warmer gold hue. Ginger and cinnamon can be added for a lighter sun-kissed hue.
Tips:
- The acidity of lemon is an excellent lightener, but it can also leave hair dry. Combat this with a deep conditioning coconut, linseed, olive, or argan oil.
