20-Year-Old Built Dream Tiny House From Scratch Using Reclaimed Materials — Enter Inside

Tom, a 20-year-old, is living the life many people desire. At his age, he is living a debt-free in the house of his dreams and owns everything in it. He decided to turn his dream into a reality and begun building his tiny dream house at the tender age of 17.

He Built it from Scratch

Tom’s desire for freedom of building a house to his precision and the high cost of housing inspired him to construct his tiny home by himself. Since he had just begun his apprenticeship, he figured he would be able to build his own house from scratch.

His idea of building the hut was to keep it all stress-free and modest; that is why he went for recycled materials and stuck to a budget. He loves that he does not need to spend his hard-earned money on rent. Tom describes it as “Just a simple life; all you got is once you’ve built it, it’s just yours then and there.”

No Reason Not to

Tom’s beautiful English style tiny home is built on his grandfather’s property that allows him an impressive parking lot. For a start, he had the land and a trailer, and that spurred him. He maintained the traditional rustic English feel with a window atop the sidings.

The front of the house is made of larch wood, which Tom got at a bargain from a local lumberyard. The doors and windows are from a site that sells secondhand materials, and the back and front sidings he used fence panels. He used old planks bought from a scaffolding company and scrap pieces of wood he got from work for the deck.

It was a Learning Curve

Tom is a carpenter by trade now, and building the house he says was a big learning curve that came with some challenges. The electrics and plumbing, for instance, pushed him out of his comfort zone. He said, “The hardest bit was the roof, definitely because I’ve no experience in cutting tin, laying all that and making sure it’s waterproof.”

The Inside

The minute you enter Tom’s home, your eyes are drawn to a picture featuring spectacular lake scenery. Tom says, "I really wanted to bring the outside in.” On the side is a tiny foldable work counter that he uses for work and meals. Tom used a lot of reclaimed timber around his house, mostly ripped out from old homes.

He perfectly sanded and varnished the wood before reusing to give his house a beautiful clean look. His kitchen boasts a fully functional countertop and essential appliances, such as the stove, fridge, and toaster. There is a tiny bathroom opposite the countertops with a fancy chemical toilet with an electric water flush. The shower room is made of corrugated sheet iron walls, copper taps, and pipes that accentuate the simple rustic farmhouse-inspired bathroom.

Back to the Living Room

There is a standard secondhand couch on wheels in the living space, but he wants to build one with storage in the future. On the corner is a cozy looking fireplace; a wall-mounted television facilitates movie nights on the comfy couch or luxuriously from the top-deck bedroom.

A ladder can be lowered to take you up to Tom’s small but cozy bedroom with a double mattress. Tom started working on his dream home at age 17 while earning £4 per hour and look at where he is now. He set his mind, made plans, and used what was at his disposal. You could do the same. Share Tom’s story with a friend who’d be inspired by his resilience and craftsmanship.
