120-Pound Dog Rescued After She Collapses On Mountain Hiking Excursion
Aug 03, 2020 by apost team
Animals have no way of communicating their needs to people, yet we all try our best to give our pets the best care that they deserve. In a sense, they are like children, and it is up to us to determine what they need. If our pets have medical issues, we have no way of knowing until physical signs begin to show or we take our pets to the vet's office.
On July 25th 2020, Richard Warren uploaded a video showing a St. Bernard dog named Daisy who collapsed while hiking with her owners on Scafell Pike in the UK. She was saved by the mountain rescue team.
Daisy was walking uphill with her owners on the summit of Scafell Pike when she unexpectedly collapsed and was unable to move. Of course, to her owners, she seemed perfectly fine until her sudden collapse.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was immediately called in for help. They posted a full statement of the rescue on their Facebook page, stating that Daisy had shown signs of severe pain in her back legs and could not move. They were called for help when the owners realized that they could not move the 120-pound dog down the mountain on their own.

As if Daisy's condition wasn't bad enough, bad weather was about to befall the mountain as well. The rescue team quickly arrived at the scene with a stretcher and loaded Daisy onto it. While rolling Daisy down the mountain on the stretcher, they reached out to a local veterinarian for advice on how to treat her, reports the BBC.
The veterinarian recommended that the team introduce themselves to Daisy to relieve her stress from being around strangers. After the initial introductions, the team would then have to give Daisy analgesia to relieve her pain and discomfort.
The introduction process took quite a few attempts because Daisy was already distressed. The presence of strangers was making her feel more uneasy, but this discomfort was soon removed when the rescue team offered her treats. After plenty of treats, Daisy understood that the team was trying to help her.
The team typically rescues adults and children who have gone hiking and cannot make it down the mountain due to poor weather or injuries. They had to adjust the stretcher per the uniqueness of this mission. After making it dog friendly, they also had to consult veterinarians before the mission to properly prepare.
In their post about this rescue mission, the team states:
"Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team would like to thank both West Lakeland Veterinary Group and Galemire Veterinary Hospital who got in touch and gave invaluable advice and support."
Daisy was rescued by her current owners a few months ago from poor living conditions. Since her rescue, she has completely changed, being in higher spirits than before. Daisy is now dearly loved by her new family and has a completely new life. However, the hike was a little too much for the poor pup to handle. Thanks to the rescue team, Daisy is now in great health and ready for another hike!
