12 Careless Ways You're Ruining Your Hair
Apr 05, 2016 by apost team
Dear Hair,
We are so sorry for all the bad things we have done to you. We never meant to hurt you, we just weren't thinking when we were doing all of these mindless things. Please take our apology to heart! We promise to stop doing the following things in order to show you how much we truly love you.
1. Not Cleaning Our Beauty Utensils
Dirty beauty tools are a nightmare for your scalp and clog the pores on your head. Grimy combs, curling irons, straighteners and the like use your hair to get rid of their dirt! And please just treat yourself to a new straightener when it reaches it's expiration date! Yes, you read right, they can expire.
2. Sleeping On Cotton Bedding
Silk pillowcases are simply magical! Wondering if they're really worth the extra cash? Well, cotton absorbs your body's moisture while you sleep which silk doesn't and they have an amazing cooling effect on hot days. Go for it!
3. Being Too Careless In The Sun
Your parents weren't lying! Your entire body needs sunscreen, not just your nose, arms or neck. Many hair products such as conditioners or sprays are packed with SPF that can really save your hair in the summer.
4. Towel-Drying Your Hair
This is especially important for those with lovely natural curls or waves. Textured hair is drier than other types of hair which is why rough towels will agitate your hair, making make it frizzy and static. Instead, try using a microfiber towel or even an old cotton shirt.
5. Attacking The Knots In Our Hair
Be gentle with your hair. Forcing knots to come out with a comb is a total no-go. Opt for a paddle brush instead and let the knot gently unravel. You'll save yourself some pain as well.
6. Unhealthy Eating
You may be tired of hearing it, but it's true. You are what you eat. First off: water! Being hydrated can do wonders for your body. And to keep your hair shiny and smooth, make sure to get enough vitamin A, C and E. You can't fight science.
7. Pulling Back Your Sunglasses
When you go indoors, try to take your sunglasses off instead of pulling them back. All that back and forth really stresses your hair and you risk pulling out strands of hair that get caught in your shades. Buy a cute sunglasses case instead!
8. Washing Too Much
This totally depends on your hair type. While some people can wash their hair daily and have no negative side effects, others risk really drying out their hair. So if you have thick hair that tends to frizz, try cutting down on the shampoo.
9. Dyeing Your Hair Often
Getting occasional touch-ups on your highlights or roots is totally fine, as are drastic dye jobs, but try to stick to a minimum of six weeks between treatments. All those chemicals make your head sensitive and can hurt your scalp. Don't overdose!
10. Neglecting Your Scalp
Healthy scalp = healthy hair. It's that easy. Treat your scalp to a nice massage every once in a while and don't let it get in too close contact with products or appliances that may dry it out.
11. Overdoing It With Dry Shampoo
Please don't hate us! We know dry shampoo is a miracle product. But too much of it can clog your pores, causing pimples or even cysts. And it also leaves your hair a bit dull over time. We are so sorry.
12. Wearing Too Tight Hairstyles
Although slick looks are totally chic, they are killing your follicles. Like you, your hair needs to relax!
