11 Things Guaranteed To Clog Your Sink Drain
May 23, 2018 by apost team
Have you ever dumped something down the sink because you were in a rush and it had a bit of liquid in it? You might pay for it in the future. Whether it goes down easily or not, it could lead to backups days or weeks later.
While there are obvious items you should never rinse down your sink, there are some that might not seem like a big deal, but will lead to plumbing expenses later. If you don't have a garbage disposal, stick to liquid.
1. Pasta and Rice
One of the things that makes pasta and rice so tasty is that they absorb water, expanding into plump, soft morsels as they cook. If you dump them down the sink, they will continue to expand, absorbing all of the liquid that drains down after it.

2. Eggshells
Little eggshells peeled off a boiled egg might seem like a good candidate for the sink. The problem is, these little shells are pretty sticky. They will get stuck in the bends of your plumbing and collect other debris until you have a clog.
3. Flour
You can literally make a paste with flour and water. If you dump flour, or any liquid containing flour, down your drain, you can wind up with a big gummy mess in your pipes.
4. Medication
Not only is it against the law in many areas to dump medication down any drain, some medications do not completely dissolve in water. That leaves bits of your pills collecting in your drain until it's finally too much for your plumbing.
5. Hair
Hair is the number one culprit for clogged sink drains in the bathroom. It clumps. It collects. It embeds itself until you have a big, stinky mass of dried soap, tangled hair and you don't want to know what else.
6. Baby Wipes
It doesn't matter if your baby wipes say they're flushable. They are not. Most septic systems can't handle repeat flushes of things like baby wipes that take a long time to dissolve.
7. Fruit Stickers
The stickers on pieces of fruit are easy to dismiss when they float down the drain while you're rinsing produce. They're sticky. That's bad for your plumbing. Peel them off before rinsing.
8. Condoms
It's a popular habit to flush condoms. However, condoms do not dissolve. They will stay where you send them, causing your drains to back up.
9. Cigarette Butts
Cigarette butts are not biodegradable. Every one you flush down the toilet goes somewhere–usually your plumbing.
10. Feminine Products
Lots of feminine products are labeled safe for flushing. They are not. Like baby wipes, they dissolve slowly and clog up plumbing.
11. Crafting Remnants
It's tempting to rinse off your paint brushes and wash your glitter-covered hands in the sink. However, it will accumulate in your drain. Wipe off crafting remnants before washing.
