Cher is undoubtedly one of the entertainment industry’s most prolific and enduring artists of all time. But, having made her music debut in 1965 alongside her ex-husband Sonny Bono as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher and rocking the top of the charts later as a solo act for the better part of six decades, it’s hard to believe she has yet to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. However, this changed in 2024, when the icon, also dubbed the “Goddess of Pop,” finally entered the illustrious category. However, when it came to the big day itself, all eyes weren’t only on Cher as one Hollywood starlet’s attempt to emulate the star fell flat for some viewers.

In December 2023, Cher opened up to Kelly Clarkson on her talk show about being snubbed by the induction organization. Clarkson expressed disbelief that Cher, who had “number ones spanning seven decades. Like, no one will accomplish that!” Cher clarified, “Two of us have,” before adding, “It took four of them to be one of me.” Clarkson’s bewilderment that Cher wasn’t yet in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame prompted the singer to remark, “You know what, I wouldn't be in it now if they gave me $1 million… They can just you-know-what themselves.”

But in 2024, Cher finally got her dues and joined the exclusive club. At the ceremony on Oct. 19, 2024, Cher gave a moving speech but also joked that it was “easier getting divorced from two men” than being inducted.

“I’m a good singer, you know, I’m a good singer. I’m not a great singer. You know what? I’ll take it. And also, I changed the sound of music forever, all right?” Cher said, attributing her success to “The one thing that I have never done, is I never give up. I never give up.”

While Cher finally had the long-overdue recognition she deserved, another star was not as roundly lauded. Actress Zendaya had the honor of introducing Cher on stage and did so in a dress that paid homage to the music icon. The 27-year-old’s sparkling criss-cross gold gown featuring skin-baring cutouts was a throwback to one of Cher’s outfits worn in her variety series “Cher” in the 1970s. The young actress certainly turned heads in the sultry dress, but not necessarily for the right reasons.

“She’s gorgeous but this is too revealing,” one user said, as others commented, “Does she really need to be almost naked..?” and “why beautiful, amazing, talented women need to undress to get attention”

“Women walking around less than half dressed acting like they are being “edgy” is old and boring. It’s tacky and lacks imagination. These same women will vow and fight for women’s rights,” one critic wrote, adding, “Put some clothes on, act like a lady, have respect for yourself and show you have an intelligent and creative mind that can move beyond what pop culture says you “should look and act like”.”

“Why are all celebrity women feeling like they have to be 90% naked to be relevant. I hate what modern-day feminism has done to women,” a comment read, while another likened the outfit to Princess Leia’s slave costume and said, “Cringing - leaves nothing to the imagination and she’s a stunning woman without needing to favor nudity in a dress.”

However, some defended Zendaya’s style choice and praised the star for channeling Cher.

“Total Cher vibes and I’m here for it. Gorgeous 🔥” one user gushed as another said, “This look is iconic she’s looks so good 😍”

“Zendaya outdid herself again!! 😍😍😍 absolutely stunning,” a third fan concurred.
