Woman Tells Partner To 'Leave My Apartment Right Now' After He Swears At Cat
Aug 25, 2021
Cat people and dog people have been arguing for decades over which furry, four-legged-friend is the better pet. There have even been movies like “Cats & Dogs,” which have dramatized this intense housepet rivalry. With that said, many cat lovers and dog aficionados simply have logical reasons for their preferences, and it’s rare that you hear people seriously fighting about it.
In this AITA post on Reddit from August 2021, however, the original poster’s cat led to a huge relationship disagreement. The original poster, 24, starts off her story by explaining that she recently invited her boyfriend, 30, to live with her. When the couple started to seriously consider the move, the boyfriend started making comments about his partner’s cat, Millie. He would make jokes about her and say that he was a dog person. He even asked his girlfriend, the original poster, if she would be willing to give up Millie before he moves in. While the girlfriend didn’t take her partner’s comments seriously at first, she realized that he wasn’t joking.
Nonetheless, it seemed like a non-issue, as the boyfriend reassured his partner that he would tolerate the cat if she was that important to his girlfriend.
But then things got a little weird. One night, the girlfriend caught her partner saying something incredibly hostile to Millie in the other room. What he said was so heinous that the girlfriend says that she started crying, telling her partner to leave immediately. She took to Reddit to ask the community whether her response was valid or if she was overreacting to the situation.
According to the girlfriend’s post, her boyfriend cursed at the cat and called it “worthless.”
“It terrified me, because I’ve never ever heard him speak with such malice. He sounded like a different person,” the original poster wrote. “It was just so cold and hostile that I panicked, and rushed out there to see him looking at Millie.”
“I completely freaked out,” the original poster says of her reaction. “I was yelling asking what he thought he was doing talking to her like that? He jumped and I scooped Millie up and told him to leave my apartment right now.”
The boyfriend, as one might imagine, was upset, particularly because he feels that his girlfriend chose Millie over him — among other reasons.
“...he said it felt awful that I chose a cat over him, and that I called it 'my' apartment when it’s supposed to be our place. He told me he was constantly feeling second best to Millie, who I wouldn’t even consider rehoming, and I had thrown him out over an animal when he’s a person,” the girlfriend explains.
Most Redditors took the girlfriend’s side, with many claiming that the boyfriend was “gaslighting” her. Others made the point that how someone treats an animal tells a lot about their character and personality.
“A way a person talks about an animal or treats an animal is a good indication of the type of person they are. After All the talk about wanting to get rid of her, I could never trust him alone with her,” one Redditor wrote.

“How do I know he won't poison her? Physically hurt her? Or dump on the side of the road? If it was my boyfriend he would be gone, flat out gone. If you don't like cats/dogs that's fine but when you are just nasty about it then you cross a line.”
Another Redditor echoed this sentiment.
“Your gut is telling you something is wrong here and I think you should listen to it. It’s one thing not to be a cat person, but it’s disturbing for him to hate an animal you love this much,” they wrote. “My boyfriend hated cats and grumbled a bit about having to live with one. But he never once even came close to implying that I should get rid of my cat. We moved in together and he now loves my cat more than anything in the world. I think the way people treat animals says a lot about their character.”
One Redditor did shift the blame to the original poster, making the point that she was in the wrong for putting her cat in this situation to begin with.
“He has given you signs and told you multiple times how he doesn’t like Millie. He’s lying about the ‘I was joking’ probably saying that because he got caught and didn’t have anywhere else to go. Don’t cry when he gets rid of your cat one day while you’re absent. Because he will and will dumb play you like he has done all of this months,” the Redditor wrote.
