Woman Picks Up Sand Dollar And Wasn't Prepared To Turn It Over

Apr 09, 2020

Many people collect seashells and sand dollars while on the beach. However, this woman picked up a sand dollar and after turning the dollar over, she realized that it was not the normal, pale, dead sand dollar found on the beach and made into jewelry. This woman had picked up a live sand dollar.

What many people may not know is that sand dollars are actually living organisms. When one gathers sand dollars on the beach, dead, white, dried-out sand dollars are what are usually found. However, that does not mean that live sand dollars don't make it to the ocean coastline.

Finding a living sand dollar is especially rare. Most people do not even know what a live sand dollar looks like and it how it differs from the hard and white discs that are usually collected with a trip to the shore or purchased at a gift shop.

As the woman in this video picks up the object, it becomes clear that is not a dead sand dollar. Unlike dead sand dollars, this one is gray and also has a slick exterior. What is more amazing is what she finds when she flips over the sand dollar. This living sand dollar actually has tiny feelers that are moving!

Although live sand dollars are totally harmless, it is still important that they are returned to their home in the ocean so that they can continue to thrive in their natural habitat.
