Window Washers Left Dangling From 34-Story Building After Scaffolding Dislodges — Firefighters Hurry To Rescue Them

The job is more dangerous than people realize, as evidenced by a near-fatal incident that took place in New York City in October of 2020.

The "Big Apple" is home to some incredibly tall buildings. Two window washers were working on a 34-story building at the Brookfield Place complex when a scary situation developed, reports Daily Mail. The scaffolding dislodged and took away their safe platform. The two window washers found themselves hanging onto the building. The terrifying ordeal found them helpless. Losing their grips would have led to a long fall to the streets below.

Luckily, the first responders arrived on the scene right away and began to help the window washers, reports Daily Mail. New York City Fire Department rescuers used ladders to reach the window washers. The rescuers then secured the workers with ropes. An FDNY team then cut through the building's windows to bring the window washers inside. Afterward, the washers declined any medical treatment.
Incidents of dislodged and dangling scaffolds do happen. Each job a window washer takes comes with great risks, even when following all necessary safety steps. Again, it is a dangerous job. Thankfully, there are rescuers like the ones working for FDNY capable of responding.
The image of the dangling scaffold is quite terrifying. Amazingly, the window washers were able to hold on when the platform came loose. Photos from the ground show the FDNY and some of their tools. Pictures of the glass-cutting tools give people an insight into the skills required to run a rescue response. The New York Fire Department deserves tremendous credit for rising to the occasion to help two workers in life-threatening distress.
