What Actually Happens Below The Surface When You Lose That Extra Weight
Jun 20, 2018
Most of us who have dealt with weight issues throughout our lives know what it feels like to be on either end of the weight spectrum. According to medical experts, nearly a third of the population is overweight with a body mass index of more than 30 with the number of people that experience this being adults as well as children.
So, many of us work hard to lose that additional body mass at a great loss of nutrients and vitamins in our system. So, you might look like a brand new person, but you may feel lousy! You need to do it the right way and heed the warning signs of how losing weight can adversely affect your body:
1. Healthier Teeth
According to a study done in Thailand in 2016, a study done on both overweight individuals as well as people at a clinically normal body weight found that 70% of people who were studied who had extra weight had some form of gum disease or dental issues. Eating a healthier diet will naturally keep your teeth and gums in better condition.

With many cardiovascular problems irreversible even with proper medication, most of these problems can be prevented with weight loss leading to less strain overall on the heart.
2. Improved Kidney Function
One of the major disruptors of kidney function is obesity. When fat is stored in great abundance in the body, all the organs, including the kidneys, need to work harder to metabolize the chemicals that are needed to allow them to function properly. Kidneys suffer a deficiency of nephron cells when you have excess weight because they cannot produce fast enough to maintain the proper kidney function leading to kidney failure. Losing weight reduces this risk.
3. Lower Risk of Type II Diabetes
This type of diabetes is severe enough to have someone in daily need of an insulin injection, so gaining more fatty deposits in your body literally stresses out the cells in the body in the network referred to as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). As the ER network is stressed to its limit, the body can no longer produce insulin at the rate that it needs to balance the amount of sugar in the bloodstream.
When you maintain a healthy weight, this insulin levels in your body maintain a proper balance and diabetes is unlikely to form even if you have a genetic predisposition for the disease.
4. Fortified Nails and Thicker Hair
Iron deficiency not only occurs from eating foods low in iron but an abundance of the wrong foods that lead to not enough iron intake. This can manifest itself in dry skin and thinner hair. It can be alleviated with a proper diet of iron-rich foods that are healthier for you and allow you to maintain a proper weight and balancing metabolism.
5. Reduction in Joint Aches and Pains
It is no secret that carrying around additional weight wreaks havoc with your joints. With so much more weight, the pressure on these parts of the body begins to suffer damage that is oftentimes irreparable. Researchers have also found the reducing your weight to a clinically acceptable size for your height greatly reduces the risk of osteoarthritis in most adults. Even in senior citizens who are advanced in years and already exhibiting joint pain, medical professionals found that with every pound they lost, the joint pressure they were experiencing was 4 times less than with the extra weight.
6. Improved Ability to Conceive
Being too thin as well as too heavy can have the same negative outcome when it comes to trying to have a baby. A study was done over 20 years ago on two groups of women who were both trying to conceive. One group was overweight while the other group was considered a clinically normal weight. The results were that the overweight women had difficulty getting pregnant because the additional weight gain was having an adverse effect on their ovulation cycle and their chances overall of conceiving. When the same women went on a diet regimen, the majority showed improvement in ovulation with nearly all of them (11 out of 13) becoming pregnant.
7. Lowered Risk of Certain Cancers
According to the National Institutes of Health, obesity can account for at least 20% of all diagnosed cases of cancer. Additional fat cells play a direct roll in weakening the immune process with an imbalance of metabolic processes in the body needs to work harder to process the additional fat cells, forming tumors. There is also a prevalence of this with women if they do not maintain a healthy weight.
8. Reduction in Risk of Heart Disease
In the last 20 years, scientists were hopeful that their findings would should a reduction in the rate of heart disease for people in the U.S. Unfortunately, over that same period, there was a reduction in caloric intake from the late 60s from 40% to 34%, but an increase in cardiovascular diseases due mainly to less physical activity.
When you choose to be your best self and take into account your “best” weight, then with it come many health benefits that will contribute to a longer and much healthier life in the long run.
9. Improved Brain Functioning
With excess weight comes an overabundance in the production of special proteins in the bloodstream known as inflammation markers. As they overproduce in people who are obese, they slow down the normal cognitive processes of the brain and lead to more overweight people scoring at a lower IQ than individuals who maintain a healthy weight.
10. Restless Sleep and Snoring Alleviated
With elevated blood pressure and insulin resistance due to excessive weight comes a body system trying to work overtime to properly metabolize all the additional fat cells in the bloodstream, leading to sleep apnea which is shortness of breath or your breathing stopping sporadically throughout the night. Breaking this cycle means going on a healthy diet that allows your metabolism to properly process a conservative amount of fat in a timely manner leading to healthy sleep patterns.
11. Greater Life Expectancy
When our body has to work overtime to complete all the bodily functions in a proper way for us to be healthy, it can lead to damaging organs and shortening life expectancy in general. Research has found that just losing a few pounds can add at least 7 full months to your lifespan.
12. More Supple Skin
The most obvious effect of weight gain on the skin is that your skin begins to stretch with the additional fat cells resulting in “double chins” and additional arm “flab” among other folds that appear everywhere on your body. There is also the internal changes due to metabolic and chemical imbalances that may bring on acne, psoriasis, dry skin, and even more serious afflictions like shingles. Maintaining a healthy weight means a healthy diet allows for the body to function properly and skin cells to rejuvenate properly with proper moisture in the body as well as external moisture maintenance that will actually not be done in vain.
