During the second annual Invitational at PGA National, an unexpected "critter" made a surprise appearance. Even more surprising was what sent that critter away: a helpful band of critters!
It's ironic that a few wild animals would make an appearance at an animal benefit event, but that's what happened. Golfers were stunned—and concerned—to see an alligator walking along the green near the 9th hole of the course. To their relief, though, nothing had to be done. A flock of Canada geese was handling the situation!
As the alligator walked along the green, the group of eight geese followed him closely. None of them seemed to be in a hurry. The alligator walked so slowly he was almost sauntering, but he didn't stop going. The geese seemed to be there to make sure he went back to where he came from.
Amazed golfers had retreated to their golf carts nearby, and some of them caught the strange interaction on video. A group of geese was chasing an alligator. Sort of. None of them were running. But the geese seemed upset, and the alligator knew they meant business. He left the green peacefully.
Maybe the geese were protecting their nesting areas? Possibly, the geese were defending the golfers' rights to the greens during the day? Maybe the geese and the alligator have had an ongoing feud and the alligator knew he was out of line? In any case, everybody was glad when the unusual animal encounter ended safely for everybody. The alligator left, and the tournament went on.
