From all-star performer to civil rights trailblazer, Sammy Davis Jr. was a monumental figure in American music. During his long career he was a comedian, movie star, singer, and so much more. In this compelling 1985 performance, he sang the hit "Mr. Bojangles" in Germany.
Along with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. was a member of the famous "Rat Pack" of singers that dominated the Las Vegas scene and became internationally famous. The Rat Pack appeared together in shows in movies, at times even pulling off stand-up comedy routines. They were true, all-around entertainers.
As a black man in a racist society and a majority-white entertainment world, Davis JR. did a lot to overcome seemingly impassible limits. He refused to perform in clubs that did not allow black customers, thereby using his status as a celebrity to fight for civil rights. His efforts were often successful, with many clubs allowing integration in response to his demands.

His voice, as always, was exceptional, and his stage presence was that of an entertainer doing exactly what they were born to do.
