Toddler Comforting Her Older Sister Illustrates The Importance Of Teaching Children Empathy

Mar 27, 2023

The world can be a cruel place to live in sometimes. But thankfully, there are still people around who continue to prove that there is still kindness in the world. Though the truth is people will always have reasons to have faith in humanity no matter how hard life gets. Yes, one just has to look around to see through that kindness. Sometimes, a friend lending an ear to listen to your problem or a loved one extending a helping can already bring a smile to one's face and change everything. Even as simple as getting a smile from a stranger can make a difference. Those little things matter. At the end of the day, no one can deny that kindness is everywhere. But did you know that kindness starts at home? Yes, teaching kids how to be empathetic toward other people can create a ripple effect. Not only will they learn how to empathize with their parents or siblings, but they will also learn how to be there for other people. Whether people admit it or not, there's nothing more fulfilling than knowing that one raised the kind of kids who are not only good at home but also touch the hearts of people outside the four walls of their homes. But parents can see through their children's souls and see that kindness in the littlest of things, like seeing their children helping each other out.

A mom from Virginia named Lauren Reed witnessed it with her two kids in February 2023 – and she couldn't be more proud of them.

Reed, in a video shared on TikTok, gave people a glimpse of the kind of connection her two daughters has.

Reed's youngest daughter Maisie can be seen comforting her daughter Clementine who was showing signs of big emotions.

"Clementine was working through some big feelings and her little sister wanted to help her feel better," the text on the video read.

Sitting beside her older sister, Maisie rubbed and patted Clementine's arms. But it was just the start. Clementine felt the love of her sister. So, she said some very sweet words that tugged the hearts of people on TikTok.

"One day I was thinking about and her and today she's thinking about me," Clementine said in the video.

"Yep, yep," Reed said, responding to Clementine.

Reeda also encouraged her younger daughter to keep comforting her sister and praised her for what she did.

"Maisie, that's so kind," Reed said.

Toward the end of the video, Maisie gave a short but moving message to her older sister.

"Sorry sis," Maisie said.

The moment made Reed one proud mom to her two kids.

"The bond between these two is something special," Reed wrote in the caption of her TikTok video.

Meanwhile, the video was flooded with messages of positivity, with parents praising Reed for raising sweet and caring children.

"Empathy is the strongest foundation to lay as a parent. Both are full of empathy. Well done, momma," one user wrote.

"That has to be taught. You're doing it mama. You're raising some incredible humans that will make the world better," one other person said.

Reed said her children have been more caring towards each other since then.

"This was the first time I had seen Maisie comfort her in that way, but Clementine has done that to Maisie many times," Reed told Mom.com.

"That video was from a couple of months ago, and since that moment, they both comfort each other in this way often. It's the most amazing thing to see."
