Three Nuns Take In An Undesirable 9-Year-Old Pitbull After Losing Their Own Pet

In 2014, three nuns from Nyack, New York, adopted a nine-year-old pit bull named Remy who’d been at an animal shelter for four months.

Three nuns from Nyack, New York, visited Hi Tor Animal Care Center with one goal in mind: to adopt a dog that no one else would want. When the women met Remy, an elderly pit bull who’d been at the shelter in Pomona, New York, since October 2014, they knew she was the dog for them.

“I wanted to bring a dog home that might get euthanized if we didn’t take her,” Sister Veronica Mendez told News 12, as reported by The Huffington Post. “And when I noticed the sign said ‘9 years,’ I said, ‘Virginia, we want this one because nobody else is going to want her.’”

West Artope, executive director at Hi Tor, told The Huffington Post that he was pleasantly surprised that the sisters weren’t at all put off by the thought of owning a pit bull, a breed who gets a bad rap for being aggressive.

“Most people have a pretty bad understanding of pits,” he said. “But Remy was sensitive to the sisters, especially to Sister Virginia, who walks with a cane. She kept up with her and was so attentive.”

Remy now lives with the nuns at Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine. As if this story isn't touching enough, the sisters didn't have to fork out a single cent in adopting Remy. Pauline Jarney, a Hi Tor volunteer, and Roberta Bangs, a Hi Tor board member, were so moved by the nuns’ actions that they footed the bill for them.
