Research completed recently at Oregon State University discovered that sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli, can improve cancer therapy’s effectiveness, especially among sufferers of cancer of the prostate, and it may even prevent cancer completely! This compound causes the prostate cancer cells to die off which can greatly slow the progression and spread of the disease. Chemotherapy’s effectiveness is multiplied when combined with broccoli.

Researchers state that in order to truly benefit from sulforaphane’s cancer-fighting benefits, broccoli would need to be eaten in very large amounts, not typical of most people, and so a supplement may a better idea.

Broccoli Can Help Remove Toxins Cause By Pollution

A study published by the The official journal of the Clinical Epigenetics Society that by regularly consuming broccoli sprouts, irritants inhaled as a result of air pollution may be removed from your body and detoxification can occur! Air pollution is becoming a bigger and bigger problem, especially in countries like China, and so this is some good news!

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health performed this study, wherein clinical trials that took place over 3 months, 291 Chinese women and men living in heavily polluted areas were observed.

Once ground had lime and pineapple juice and the other had a drink made of freeze-dried broccoli sprout water. The participants who consumed the broccoli powder expelled more of the irritant acrolein by 23% and the carcinogen benzene by nearly 60% than those who didn’t!

It May Slow The Progeria’s Progression

Progeria is a terrible but rare disease that most patients succumb to before reaching the age of 30. Progeria is characterized by suffer’s bodies ageing at a rapidly increased rate. There is no known cure at this time for this disease but broccoli was found to slow down its progression by way of decreasing the protein defect known as progerin. A study done by Technische Universitaet Muenchen used the compound sulforaphane to prevent the buildup of progerin in sufferers’ cells.

The amount of broccoli needed in order to obtain its many benefits is unclear and recommendations range from anywhere between a half a cup to as much as 1.6 cups per day!
