These Are The Shower Habits That You Need To Ditch

May 08, 2018

A morning shower is an essential part of our routine. While some people like to take their time enjoying long showers, others are always in a hurry; and while some cannot start their day without a shower, others find it reasonable to skip a day or even two. But even for those who shower every day, did you know that some of your daily shower habits might be unhealthy and affecting you in ways, you never imagined.

So here is a list of things you do every day while taking a shower, which is not good for your health.

Using a Bar of Soap

The reason why people don't use soap dishes anymore is that leaving a bar of soap in the same open spot invites bacteria to grow on it. The same bacteria will be all over your body the next time you use that soap. An easy fix would be to switch to liquid body gels and wash. Also using scented soaps might feel pleasant because of the fragrance, but they might cause skin irritation, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Washing Your Face In The Shower

A hot or a warm shower is perfect for the body but not for your face. Washing your face with hot or warm water can dry your skin very quickly. People with acne may also notice redness and intense irritation post washing their face in a hot shower. It's always better to wash your face at the sink with relatively colder water.

Not Replacing or Cleaning Your Loofah Regularly

This is one of the most ignored accessories required while taking a shower. I bet the loofah in your shower has not been replaced or even cleaned for weeks, maybe months! Years?! Well, before the germs accumulated by your loofah start affecting your health, why don't you gift yourself a brand new sponge or loofah or clean the existing one?

Skipping Washing Your Feet

While it is convenient to think that just letting the soap run down to your feet cleans them, the truth is, you are only being lazy and not taking care of your hygiene. Your feet can get quite sweaty and dirty throughout the day, especially if you are not habitual of wearing socks or slippers in the house. And it's equally important to clean them properly.

Avoiding Cold Showers

Contrary to most popular belief that, 'there is nothing a hot shower cannot fix,' cold water showers are proven to be more beneficial and helpful for your hair and skin as compared to hot showers. Yes, it might be little uncomfortable to stand in cold water first thing in the morning, but a quick splash of cold water improves your immunity, increases your metabolism and relieves you of stress instantly.

Over Exfoliation

A gentle scrub now and then is good for your skin idea, but doing so regularly can cause damage. Our skin generates new fresh skin cells by exfoliating itself and renewing every 27 days. Exfoliating every day means destroying new skin cells that can then cause redness and irritation. So it's better to wait for the dead skin cells build up for few days before you scrub it out.

Using Old Razors

We often tend to keep using the same razor because it is still removing our unwanted hair for us. But have you ever wondered why your skin turns red and itches after you shave?! It's because it's time to get a new razor as the blades are dull. We should not let the old razors sit in the shower, especially the ones that say, use and throw.

Washing Your Hair Daily

One of the major reasons for dry and damaged hair is washing your hair with hot water and that too every day. Cleaning too often can leave your scalp dry which makes it release more oil, hence causing your hair to become too oily.

Rubbing Towels on Your Skin and Hair

The next obvious thing to do after taking a shower is to dry yourself using a tower. And without even waiting for a second, we start to rub our towels against our body including our face and hair to wipe that water away. While this is the natural thing to do, however, rubbing a towel against your skin is not what dermatologists recommend. Instead, they suggest a patting motion to dry your skin. Wrapping your towel around your head could also be damaging to your hair locks.

Skipping the Moisturizer

In today's fast-paced lifestyle, it's quite common to do most things in a hurry. Taking a shower is also considered as a task and is most often followed by an immediate list of tasks like getting ready for work, making a cup of coffee or checking our mobile phones. Your skin deserves a moisturizer right after you get out of the shower. It ensures that your skin is nice and warm and prevents any itching throughout the day. It also helps in replenishing the moisture your skin might have lost from being in that hot shower.
