The Royal Chef Talks Through Queen Elizabeth's Favorite Cake Recipe
Apr 14, 2020
The royal family has recipes that have been passed down for many generations. It is always a treat to get some insight into what the Queen likes to eat. One of her personal chefs, Darren McGrady, shared his wisdom about the Queen's favorite cake recipe.
We all have our favorite cakes, and Queen Elizabeth II is no different. Her cake of choice is a special chocolate cake. According to McGrady, the recipe goes back to Queen Victoria's personal chef Gabriel Tschumi, who first made the cake. Queen Victoria was Queen Elizabeth's great-great-grandmother, so the recipe has certainly been in the family for a very long time.

McGrady was the Queen's personal chef for 15 years before he moved to the U.S. As per tradition, the Queen would request this cake twice a year: for her real birthday in April, and for her official birthday in June. It must be great to have two birthdays–and two cakes!
The Queen isn't the only one who has a soft spot for this cake. Every member of the royal family requests the chocolate birthday cake, reports McGrady. All the cakes look identical however, as the only writing on the cake is "Happy Birthday"–there are never any names.
