Spoiled Teen Opposed His Parents Buying First-Class Ticket For Nanny So They Taught Him A Good Lesson

Raising children is hard especially when parents are not around all the time to guide them in their everyday lives as well as how they treat other people. In most cases, things would get worse when they enter their teenage years as there would be times that they would feel entitled to the point that they don’t care about the feelings of others.
This is what happened to a boy named Matt, and his mom taught him probably the biggest lesson of his life after he expressed his dislike of what his parents gave to the family nanny during an international trip.
It all began in August 2022 when an online user named TAMommaof3 shared a story in the AITA thread on Reddit.
She began her story by giving other users a background as she explained that she and her husband had their first child named Matt — who was 18 years old at the time when she wrote the post — when they were just 17.
Initially, they didn’t have the means to afford everything as they were not financially well off, that was until they started working hard and were able to earn a good income.
“Currently, we both work well-paying jobs, buy a spacious home, and have our luxuries,” she wrote at the time.
Following this, they had two more children, a boy and a girl, and since they couldn’t stay at home to take care of the younger kids full-time, they decided to hire a nanny named May, who was 45 years old.
When Matt turned 11, his mom noticed that he had a “complicated personality change.” During that year, he studied at a private school, and they theorized that the change in his attitude was due to his time with other teenagers.
“Maybe the contact with other teenagers brought out a selfish and elitist side of him,” the mom wrote.
The user and her husband did their best to improve their son’s attitude, but unfortunately, things got way out of hand due to the “onset of adolescence and stubbornness.”
At the age of 16, things were going well for the couple as they decided that their son should work part-time so he could have a sense of responsibility when it comes to his own finances and his experience seemed to have given him a “reality check” when the perks were cut off from him by his parents.
Later on, the user revealed that she and her husband decided to plan an international trip after the pandemic. They also thought of tagging the nanny along with them instead of letting her stay at home. May had the best employers as the user said they would pay for everything.
One day, the couple were talking to each other about buying the nanny a first-class seat for her and her son so they could have the best times of their lives. At the time, Matt overheard the conversation and started to question why his parents would do that.
“He asked why we should do this, we were already paying for everything, let her go economy class if she can't afford first class,” the concerned mother wrote.
The mom was shocked at how her son reacted, and she immediately corrected and told him that what he said was “mean,” and that May was an important part of the family as she gave up spending time with her own child just to take care of his two younger siblings.

Even though the mother explained everything to her son, the user said he “still stood his ground,” and she then proposed a plan to teach him a lesson.
“I said I'd buy him an economy seat and he'd have to turn around to pay for an upgrade for him to see how privileged he is to have parents who can pay. He nodded, thinking it was a joke even though I said it wasn't,” she wrote.
A few months later, the mom warned Matt that his ticket was in economy class and he still didn’t believe her.
The day of the trip finally came, and the son was “like a shocked pikachu” when he found out that he was not going to be seated in first class along with his other family members. Matt threw a tantrum at the airport as he explained to his parents that traveling for 10 hours in economy class would be uncomfortable for him.
“I just replied: You had 6 months to gather, you've been warned,” she continued.
When they arrived at their destination, the mom said the flight was okay, but her son was mad almost the entire trip. He described his experience as “almost torture,” and he thought what his parents did went too far.
The user’s husband was fine with the decision to punish their son, but her parents disagreed.
Following this, other users expressed their thoughts, and most of them seemed to have agreed with the mom’s way of teaching her son a lesson.
“Hopefully he learned a valuable life lesson,” one wrote.
“Keep this up til your son realises that your money is not his money,” another one wrote.
“Brilliant parenting right that, and amazing employers too!! Well done for recognising the fact your employee deserved that break,” one commented.
