Sofía Vergara Reveals The Sun Hasn't Touched Her Bare Face Since The '90s

Sunscreens perform the vital task of shielding the body from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Among their many roles, they help to prevent premature aging, prevent broken blood vessels and reduce the chances of people getting skin cancer. In many cases, they also help to decrease the sun sensitivity that some types of drugs cause. According to WebMD, sunscreens protect the skin by absorbing UV rays and preventing them from getting to the skin's inner layers. They can also work by reflecting radiation.
Medical practitioners also recommend wearing sunscreen indoors as the sun's UVA rays can still come on through the windows while at home or driving. Meanwhile, some sunscreens are also anti-blue light, particularly the ones developed with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Medical practitioners also recommend choosing sunscreens with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) — which measures how long the sunscreen protects the skin — from 30 and above. More importantly, individuals with a history of skin conditions, including skin cancers, and those whose skins burn more quickly are advised to choose sunscreens with higher SPF from 65.

Not resting on her laurels, Vergara has launched her beauty products brand, starting with a line of suncare products. The brand, toty, consists of a line of SPF 50+ essentials, including sun care, skin care, supplements, and makeup. In an interview with Bazaar.com, published on June 22, 2023, Vergara shared her suncare journey and how she started toty.
Vergara revealed that while growing up in Colombia, she had no idea that staying in the sun was dangerous, so she stayed in the sun a lot. However, once she learned about the sun's harmful effects, she became hooked on suncare products.
"I haven't had my face in the sun without protection since the '90s," she told the outlet.
Vergara's intention to bring a suncare product similar to Heliocare, her favorite sunscreen, led her to create toty, a nickname her family gave her.
"I wanted to bring something like Heliocare to the United States," she told Bazaar.com. "We've had a million meetings to create something that will protect the skin and also fit the U.S. guidelines."
Toty was developed with Cantabria Labs, the maker of Heliocare, and is making its debut with four products and two application tools that are all vegan and cruelty-free. Toty's products and prices are thus: "Ilumina CC Cream SPF 50+, available in 15 shades ($42); Ilumina CC Creamy Compact SPF 50+, refillable and available in 15 shades ($54); Solaria Mineral SPF 50+ ($42); and Solaria Infusion, an antioxidant booster supplement ($42)." The tools are "the Ilumina Brush ($28) and Ilumina Blender ($12)."
The products, which can be simply incorporated into everyday beauty routines, are touted to diminish and or prevent sun damage and photo-aging.
