‘Shorkie’ Puppy Has Amazing Reaction To Meeting Newborn Baby Sister — And It’s Mutual
Aug 11, 2020
When Wickett the Shorkie puppy and baby Sophie met for the very first time, they created magic as they started conversing in their own secret language. Sophie's parents posted the adorable video to YouTube in November of 2011.
Dogs are great family animals, but sometimes a growing family can be a challenge when a dog is involved. When a baby comes along, a dog friend can sometimes start to feel neglected. Luckily for us, not only were the parents supervising baby Sophie and her dog friend, Wickett. They were also ready with a camera.
Introducing Miss Sophie
The video of this great encounter is very heartwarming. Sophie is an expressive, happy baby who loves to babble. When she meets Wickett the Shorkie for the first time, they seem to understand each other perfectly.
Sophie greets Wickett with some non-verbal chatter. Wickett barks. They trade comments like this back and forth for a little bit. Wickett does a little bit of a play bow, raising his tail in the air and lowering his front paws to the ground. Sophie responds in a similar way.

Now, in their meeting, Wickett has the advantage. He's a lot more mobile than young Sophie, who can only crawl on her hands and knees. She waves at him, and Wickett wags his tail excitedly as he bounds around.
He keeps getting closer to Sophie as his human friends urge him on. Sophie smiles widely and slaps her hands on the carpet in delight as little Wickett bounds around.
The Shorkie Phenomenon
Shorkies are a great, friendly apartment-sized dog. A cross between a Yorkshire terrier and a Shih Tzu, these are dogs with big personalities and short stature. Shorkies are very expressive. They can even be a little bit noisy. During Wickett's encounter with Sophie, she laughs a lot, and he keeps approaching. It's clear that the two have quite a bit in common.
One reason for that is simple. Wickett the Shorkie is a baby, too. As a puppy, he's able to move more easily than Sophie, but they're both still in a learning phase. Hopefully, introducing them at this stage of life creates a bond that will last for many years. Dogs and children get along like peanut butter and jelly. They're a simple, classic combination that just about everyone loves.
