Sarah Ferguson Reveals She & Princess Diana Were Once Arrested For Dressing Up As Police Officers

May 22, 2023

Although it's been rumored that Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson (commonly known as Fergie), Duchess of York, were known to have had issues with each other during the last year of Diana's life, there was a time that the two royals were actually very good friends. In fact, the two women have a lot in common.

Originally they'd been close childhood friends prior to strengthening their friendship when they both married into the royal family. Diana married King Charles III in 1981, while Ferguson married Prince Andrew in 1986. This was a time when both of these young women were the rising stars in the royal family, as they were full of life and energy. They were both also known not to always be fond of royal protocols.

They would each go on to have two children — Diana with her two boys, Prince William and Prince Harry, and Fergie with her two girls, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie — with all four kids growing up together as they were fairly close in age. Incidentally, the two royal women even had their marriages break down around the same time, with each couple separating in 1992 before getting divorced in 1996.

The two went on to have a strong bond but a tumultuous relationship and friendship with each other. Both Diana and Fergie were spotted hanging out together back then and would often share exciting memories together, being fourth cousins.

While on "The Kelly Clarkson Show" in March 2023, Fergie was asked by Clarkson about a particular encounter that she and the late princess got into. In response, Fergie happily detailed and elaborated more about the hilarious moment she shared with the People's Princess back in 1986.

In her "My Story: Sarah the Duchess of York," Fergie detailed a run-in with the authorities back then in 1986 that got her and Diana in a bit of trouble. In an interview with "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Fergie expounded more on the story that got people laughing and missing the late princess.

"I was just still Fergie - I wasn't married yet - and we went into this nightclub," Fergie recalled after noting that they were wearing policemen costumes at the time. "We sat down and the waiter came up to us and said: 'Excuse me, this is a member's club and it's for fun and we don't serve police officers here' looking straight at us."

The two royals were out and about as they were both embarking on a solo trip together for Fegie's "hen's party." As they were kicked out of the bar, Fergie recalled Diana spotting a passerby and jokingly claiming that the person stole her dress. Fergie then told Diana, who she endearingly called "Dutch," to act like a police officer and keep in character.

While the two expected to have a good time drinking and hanging out together, the two's adventures took a huge turn when they were both arrested by Parks Police for impersonating a police officer. However, the story seemed to have taken a hilarious uptake after.

"We got in the back of the van, she had put her engagement ring round the other way and I put mine round the other. We're sitting there like this and she just looked round and saw smoky bacon flavored crisps and started taking them and eating them."

Eventually, the policemen noticed that it was Diana and Fergie in costumes, to their surprise.
