Samuel L. Jackson & LaTanya Richardson Defied The Odds After 50 Years And Are ‘Still Glued Together’

Stable, long-lasting relationships in Hollywood are a rare occurrence. Not only do Hollywood couples have to endure the strains of any normal relationship, but they also have to deal with being constantly in the spotlight. But despite those added pressures, Samuel L. Jackson and his wife LaTanya Richardson have managed to stay together for several decades and are still going strong to this day.

Jackson is one of the world's most widely recognized actors and is also a producer. He has appeared in a plethora of successful films, resulting in him having a very long and successful career. He first rose to fame during the late 1980s and early 1990s with movies such as "Goodfellas" and "Jurassic Park."

His collaborations with director Spike Lee have earned him even more recognition and really helped highlight his skills as an actor. Jackson skyrocketed to fame with the 1994 cult classic "Pulp Fiction," which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Through it all, Jackson has had the love and support of his wife. Richardson is an actress best known for her work not only in film and television but also on and off Broadway. She even received a Tony Award nomination for her role in "A Raisin in the Sun" back in 2014.

While it's clear these two stars are brilliant in their individual craft, they are even better together and celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary in August 2022. Read on to find out more about Jackson and Richardson's relationship and how they've been able to stay together for so long. 

It’s safe to say that Jackson has had a very long and successful career. Over the years, he has demonstrated his range as an actor by appearing in several different film genres and working alongside some of the greatest actors and directors in the industry. 

Jackson first began really going after his passion for acting in the 1970s by appearing in stage productions. It wasn’t long before the up-and-coming actor made the switch to more mainstream films and found a small amount of success in the 1980s.

The 1990s were one of the most pivotal decades in Jackson’s career as he began making big moves with notable directors and producers. The actor landed a minor role in the 1990 Martin Scorsese film “Goodfellas” before going on to play a very serious role in Spike Lee's “Jungle Fever” as well as comedic roles in “Strictly Business” and “National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1.” 

In 1993, Jackson worked with Steven Spielberg in the science fiction action film “Jurassic Park.” The following year, the actor landed a leading role in the black comedy crime film “Pulp Fiction” — a role that was handcrafted for Jackson by writer Quentin Tarantino.

Today, Jackson is still incredibly popular in the movie industry, especially with his role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has portrayed the character 11 times in a plethora of films and TV shows, including “Iron Man” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Jackson is also set to reprise the role in the series “Secret Invasion,” later on in 2022. 

Jackson and his wife Richardson have been together for a very long time and are still going strong. According to Express, the couple first met in 1970 while they were studying at a university in Atlanta, Georgia. Jackson grew up during segregation and studied at Morehouse College, which was all-male and historically Black, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He had been an usher at Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral in 1968.

Jackson and Richardson began dating shortly after they met during their college days and continued to date for quite some time before finally tying the knot on Aug. 18, 1980, in a private ceremony. However, during an appearance on "The Graham Norton Show," Jackson had a hard time recalling how he proposed to Richardson, but his wife happily reminded him, and the pair were able to share some laughs.

Nowadays, Jackson regularly shows off his beautiful wife and happy marriage on his social media accounts. Back in August 2020, Jackson posted a sweet anniversary message to Instagram along with a photo of himself and Richardson. Jackson wrote, "50 years ago we started dancing, it was all fun & games." He continued:

"The slow drag of our lives pressed together, I led sometimes, sometimes she did. We finally found that rhythm where there was no leader, we moved as one. We're still glued together, hip to hip, holding each other up; not covering as much of the floor, but owning & loving the space that's ours. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY @ltjackson_ Love You for keeping me on my toes & on the beat for 18,250 days. You make my soul sing!! Don't change the tune, we're not done dancing." 

In Hollywood, romances like this seem to be hard to come by, and many fans have wondered just how Jackson and Richardson have had such a long-lasting and happy marriage. "You have to have a big heart and the Lord," Richardson told Essence in 2018. "You can't do this without the Lord. You're going to have to turn to somebody, something — because men, they are different. They're cut from a different cloth."

Fortunately for Jackson and Richardson, they have a lot in common. They are both very involved in the entertainment industry and have continued to stand up for important social issues — something that they've been doing since their college days. "I'm telling you, we were revolutionaries," Richardson explained. "We used to say the most revolutionary thing to keep a Black family together. So that became our mantra."

Not only has this power couple stayed together for so long, but they've done so while raising a child. Their daughter Zoe was born in 1982 and followed in her parents' footsteps by working in show business. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zoe is a supervising producer on Bravo's "Top Chef."

Richardson told Essence and its readers some advice on balancing her career with motherhood. "And keep working," she said. "Keep yourself lifted. Do not (stop working) even if you have a baby. You let your baby see you working."

In August 2022, Jackson and Richardson celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary, proving just how much love and admiration they have for each other and that it's possible to have such a long-lasting relationship in Hollywood.
