Jun 29, 2021
Actress Salma Hayek was born and raised in Mexico, where she first began her career. She moved to Hollywood in 1991 to pursue larger roles, and she succeeded. Her first breakthrough role was playing artist Frida Kahlo in the 2002 film "Frida." Hayek also produced the film, and it won her nominations for Best Actress from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA Film Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Hayek has also been a successful producer and director, outside of her career as an actress. She was an executive producer of the television series "Ugly Betty," and she won a daytime Emmy Award for her directing on the children's program "The Maldonado Miracle." Her most recent project was acting in the leading role of Sonia Kincaid in the film "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard."
Hayek has also long been involved in activism, and her charitable work includes advocating for awareness on violence against women and discrimination against immigrants. In 2005, she testified before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary supporting reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
In 2007, Hayek confirmed her engagement to French business mogul François-Henri Pinault as well as her pregnancy. The star gave birth to her daughter, Valentina Paloma, in September 2007 in Los Angeles. Hayek and Pinault were married on Valentine's Day in 2009.
Hayek has always been an outspoken person. In June, 2021 she was a guest on an episode of Red Table Talk, a podcast hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, and shared that she began going through menopause when she was in her 40s. Read on to learn more about Hayek's experience with menopause.
Hayek shared her experience of speaking to a doctor about going through menopause. She said on Red Table Talk, "The questions were terrifying. They were asking me things like, 'Are your ears growing and there's hair growing out of them? Are you growing a mustache and a beard? Are you easily irritable? Are you crying for no reason? Are you gaining a lot of weight really fast that doesn't go away no matter what you do?'"
The star explained that when it comes to breast growth, every woman can have a different experience. "There are some women that when you gain weight, your boobs grow, and other women that when you have children and you breastfeed your boobs grow and they don't go back down, and then in some of the cases when you are in menopause they grow again. And I just happen to be one of those women where it happened in every single step," Hayek shared.
In fact, the growth has gotten to the point that Hayek's back is now becoming injured from the weight and she is in constant pain. She said, "But they have just kept growing. Many, many sizes. And my back has been really suffering from it. And not a lot of people talk about this."
Hayek made a point to stand up for women who feel forgotten by society as they experience menopause. "There's no expiration date for women. That has to go. You can hold your own at any age, you can dream at any age, you can be romantic at age. We have the right to be loved for who we are at the place that we are," she said emphatically.
