Rod Stewart has been performing for decades since he started his career as a singer in 1961. Throughout his life, the musician released countless albums and performed in numerous music venues worldwide to entertain his fans.
However, as the years went by, the singer’s primary struggle has been with his health, as he faced various medical issues, which left his supporters wondering whether he would continue his blossoming career or retire for the betterment of his health.
This was perceptible when he was forced to cancel his appearance at his 200th show celebration on Aug. 8, 2024, in Las Vegas.
“I’m desperately sorry to miss this 200th show celebration. Most people can work with strep throat, but obviously not me,” he wrote on Instagram, adding, “I’m absolutely gutted. I’ve been looking forward to this concert for so long. My deepest regrets for any inconvenience this has caused. Thankfully, we’ll now be returning in 2025, and I hope to see you there.”
While fans were disappointed, they were far more concerned about the rocker’s ailing health, particularly when just a few days later, more shows in Nevada and California were canceled “as the singer recovers from a summer strain of Covid-19.”
Fans were instantly thrown into worry, and the comments section was flooded with well wishes.
“Your health comes first, Sir Rod. Don’t apologize. Wishing you a speedy recovery! ❤️🙏🏼” one fan wrote, as another said, “dear @sirodsteward you don’t have to justify yourself, your health is the most important thing. I sincerely hope that you can heal in the necessary time.”
Others offered their prayers, saying, “Take care and get well soon. We are all praying for you,” and “Praying for u and sending healing vibes too.❤️”
This wasn’t the first time Stewart’s fans were left worried about the 79-year-old singer’s health. In July 2024, Stewart stunned fans when he revealed that his “days are numbered” and that he intended to make the most of his remaining time.
“I’m aware my days are numbered but I’ve got no fear,” he told The Sun, adding, “We have all got to pass on at some point, so we are all in the same basket. I am going to be enjoying myself for these last few years as much as I can.”
Stewart explained that while he could no longer “stay up all night, get drunk and go mad and still have a voice just like that” like he used to in the ’70s and ’80s, he still believed he had a few good years left in him, “probably another 15. I can do that easy mate, easy.”
He said he was also “more aware of my health now than before” and that people “should be when you start getting on a bit. It’s very important.”
After Stewart’s declaration made headlines and sent fans into a tailspin, his wife, Penny Lancaster, elaborated on her husband’s words in an attempt to temper the storm.
“Bizzare, absolutely bizarre,” she said on the British talk show, “Loose Women.”
She refuted rumors that Stewart’s health woes had gotten the best of him, citing his trademark high-energy vibes.
“I don’t know where that come from because he is literally sprinting when you’d imagine someone at 79 would be slowing down. There’s no stopping him!” Lancaster exclaimed.
She added Stewart also planned to set a world record for the fastest sprint for a 79-year-old.
“His motto is, ‘Keep your legs strong they’ll carry you through life.’ So, it’s all about fitness, health and longevity,” she said.
