Ripped Jeans Can Have Serious Consequences

Aug 08, 2018

Distressed jeans, meaning jeans which have holes or tears, are currently a fashion trend. But one thing you shouldn't do while wearing these jeans is lying on the beach or spending lots of time in the sun without applying sunscreen beforehand - because this could really give you trouble.

No matter whether the holes are on the knee, the upper thigh or the lower leg: Ripped jeans are considered to be a must-have right now. For warm summer evenings or sweltering summer temperatures they are nearly perfect, as you won't sweat as much. Still, you have to remember that you could get sunburn on the exposed areas. The holes inside the jeans not only allow the air to caress your skin, but also allow the sun to shine directly on it. You can find pictures of this side-effect on instagramm by looking under the hastag "sunburnknees".

Tricky Trap: Sunburn Because Of Ripped Jeans

Even if some people may think pictures of such burned knees are funny: Sunburned skin is not a laughing matter. Instead, it hurts a lot. The skin's condition may also worsen if it happens more often and at a later age, skin cancer can occur. This is why dermatologists say: Skin doesn't forget. To make absolutely sure nothing happens, you should never wear ripped or distresses jeans without using sunscreen.

The sun protection factor (SPF) is very important. Using a sun milk lets you stay out in the sun far longer. The higher the SPF, the better the protection. Ultraviolet radiation can't be completely blocked, though. Nordic skin types, especially red heads, should use a lotion with an SPF between 40 and 50, the "Germanic" type with blonde hair one with 30 to 40. Mixed types who can take more sun should use sunscreen with SPF 30. Only southern types (dark eyes, black hair) can get by using a lotion between 20 and 30 SPF. Sunscreen from last year may not work correctly anymore.
