Georgia is an Australian Shepherd mix. The Sunshine Dog Rescue initially spotted her at a gas station close to the US-Mexico border, reports ABC15. She was pregnant and starving.

After bringing Georgia back to their facility, a veterinarian examined her and determined that she needed an emergency Cesarean section. This risky operation had the potential to save her life and possibly her puppies. Although Georgia survived, her entire litter tragically died.

Georgia was understandably distraught after losing all of her puppies. Caretakers reported that she ripped apart her bedding in search of any sign of life. According to ABC15, the rescue's founder, Anita Osa, said the depressed dog was "frantic."

Amid Georgia's heartbreak, Anita reached out to the Facebook community. She put out a plea for orphaned puppies so the bereaved mother could have some puppies to love. Anita hoped that adopting a new litter might ease some of Georgia's grief.

Anita's efforts resulted in an unusual offer. A kind soul who had seen her posting on Facebook offered a litter of kittens. Although they weren't quite what Anita had envisioned, she decided to present them to Georgia.

Although animals sometimes nurse and nurture babies from other species, there was a risk that Georgia would reject the kittens altogether. Before introducing the kittens to Georgia, Anita reasoned that the worst-case scenario was that she'd have to care for a litter of kittens.

Anita chose to introduce the kittens to Georgia one at a time. After the first introduction went well, she brought the rest of the kittens over to their new adoptive mom. Although one of the kittens died that night, the remaining three littermates began to bond with their new mom.

Georgia quickly took to her new brood. She washed, fed, and played with them like they were her own. The kittens knew her as their mom and didn't seem to even notice that Georgia was a dog.

Such a heartwarming story that could have easily ended in tragedy deserves tremendous praise. Who exemplifies motherhood to you? Perhaps you've had an unusual opportunity to be a mother. Tell us about your motherhood-related memories below.
