Quarrel Breaks Out Between Neighbors After ‘Upset’ Vegan Writes Letter Complaining About Meat Cooking Smells
May 17, 2023
Some serious beef brewing between two neighbors has escalated due to a “downright rude” response by one party, and the drama has taken the internet by storm and divided the public alongside it.
The story first went viral after a resident of Perth, Australia, named Kylie shared photos of a handwritten letter she received from a neighbor requesting she make some amendments to her cooking habits. As per LADbible, the letter titled “Important message” was in an envelope emblazoned with the words, “Please take seriously.”
“Hello, neighbour. Could you please shut your side window when cooking, please? My family are vegan (we eat only plant-based food), and the smell of the meat you cook makes us feel sick and upset. We would appreciate your understanding,” the letter signed by Sarah, Wayne, & kids read.
The post was met with some heated opinions on both sides of the divide. Some believed nobody had the right to tell someone how to act in their own house, while others lamented the dwindling spirit of community and thought it was only neighborly to consider other people’s feelings.
Some urged Kylie to exercise some consideration for her neighbors. One user wrote, “A little courtesy goes a long way, it's not like they are asking you to wash their car or clean their house.”
Others felt quite the opposite. “You have every right to cook what you want in your kitchen,” one user commented, while another said, “Just because they’ve chosen to be vegan, it’s not your problem.”
One user, however, suggested Kylie hold a BBQ party in response, and when she decided to do so, the drama heated up a notch.
During the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023, Kylie and her family decided to hold a BBQ in celebration. But not everyone was pleased. She received another letter from her plant-based neighbors expressing their outrage over her actions.
The second letter, titled “Enough is enough,” “Please take seriously” and “last warning,” read, as reported by Fox News:
“Hello Kylie, you are taking the mickey out of me and have been downright rude. I raised my concerns of the smell of meat making my family sick and upset and you go and have a BBQ on Saturday night, inviting lots of people and you knew this would affect me and my family.”
The letter went on to say that the neighbor had been made aware of Kylie’s Facebook post.
“My friend Tina told me you took my letter to social media and it backfired on you which is 'just deserts'. Please no more BBQs and please keep that window closed when cooking otherwise I'm going to report you and go to social media too.”
The second letter elicited the same polarizing response from users, who fell on both sides of the issue.
“Your neighbours have every right to cook what they choose in their kitchen, you do not own air,” one user remarked, while another said: “OMG how ridiculous. Why should you change your eating habits to please someone else. Would they?”
Others sympathized with the plant-based family and decried the lack of civility Kylie had shown in her actions, while some found the two neighbors equally at fault. One user wrote simply:
“Be vegan. Eat meat. Each to their own!”
