Princess Charlotte & Kate Middleton Wore Matching Outfits And Headpieces To The Coronation
May 08, 2023
The second child and only daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Charlotte, is slowly growing up into a delightful young girl. With each year that passes, Charlotte's personality comes out more.
In fact, she's proving to be a very straightforward and outspoken member of the royal family. Besides her fiery personality, Charlotte also bears a striking resemblance to various family members of hers. This includes her father, her late grandmother, Princess Diana, and her late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Fans have long drawn a resemblance between her and Elizabeth since the little royal was a baby.
Born on May 2, 2015, at St Mary's Hospital in London, Charlotte has already made an impact in England as one of the children in the Cambridge family. She was born second in her family, following her older brother, Prince George. Several landmarks were illuminated pink to honor her arrival following her birth, including the London Eye and Tower Bridge. There were also salutes at Hyde Park and the Tower of London. Just a few days later, it was announced that Charlotte's full name was Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, which honored both Diana and the then-reigning monarch and her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.
Charlotte is the middle child of the Wales family, as she has an older brother, Prince George, and a younger brother, Prince Louis. She is also Prince William and Kate Middleton's only daughter and is currently third in the line of succession to the throne, following her father and her older brother. While being the middle child, Charlotte has shown that she is quite the leader in her family.
Like her glamorous mother, the young princess is proving to be very stylish. For her grandfather's coronation on May 6, 2023, Charlotte even sported a matching headpiece and outfit as her mom, designed by Alexander McQueen no less!
As Charlotte continues to grow up, she is showing more and more of her personality. She is already enjoying life as a young princess and is known for having a fiery yet silly personality. In the summer of 2019, Charlotte was spotted sticking her tongue out at the crowd at The King’s Cup regatta. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the princess also caused quite a stir when she barred photographers from attending Louis’ Christening. Charlotte reportedly said, “You’re not coming!” This is only one of many instances where the young princess took a stance to protect her siblings — her younger brother especially.
While the young princess has shown that she is willing to defend her brothers, she has gotten into a handful of tiffs with them as well. In December 2021, William opened up on an episode of Apple’s “Time To Walk” podcast about what the Wales household was really like and admitted that his kids fight nearly every morning (something that many parents all over the world can certainly sympathize with).
According to Yahoo News, he has had to diffuse his fair share of arguments between his kids, most notably between Charlotte and her older brother George, as they have repeatedly argued over which songs they want to listen to in the morning. “Most mornings there’s a massive fight between Charlotte and George as to what song is played,” the Princes of Wales said.
Charlotte is also becoming known for bearing a striking resemblance to what Diana once looked like when she was a toddler herself. Back in 2018, a fan account on Instagram posted side-by-side photographs of Charlotte and Diana and noticed their uncanny resemblance. “Omg double of her nana… what a great young lady she will turn out to be with looks as beautiful as her angel nana,” one Instagram user commented.

Considering Charlotte's protective nature of her family, especially her younger brother Louis, it’s no surprise that Charlotte was quite ready to take care of him during the coronation of King Charles on May 6, 2023.
While Charles is already technically king, holding a coronation is customary. According to the Associated Press, “There is no legal requirement for a coronation, and other European monarchies have done away with the ceremonies.”
Buckingham Palace’s assurance ahead of the event that the ceremony would be “rooted in longstanding traditions” but would also “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future,” intensified talk that Charles would soon make some substantial changes to better reflect a modern monarchy.
Many traditions were maintained for the 2023 ceremony. Among them was the use of the Gold State Coach, which was extensively refurbished for the queen’s Platinum Jubilee in early 2022 and has been used in every coronation since George IV’s in 1821. The elaborate horse-drawn carriage boasts intricate gilded carvings of cherubs and tritons, painted panels, and an interior lined with velvet and satin. The coach is so heavy it has to be pulled by at least eight horses, and even then, only at the pace of a walk.
The actual, official coronation took place in Westminster Abbey. The whole service was live-streamed and recorded for TV. The ceremony lasted several hours overall, which was especially tough for the younger guests. While Prince Louis couldn’t help acting up a little bit, Charlotte was quite reserved throughout. After King Charles’s coronation, as the guests were filing out of the abbey, she seemed to sense that Louis needed a little bit of sisterly backup following all that sitting and listening. As the children filed out after their mother, Princess Catherine, Charlotte took Louis’s hand in hers and led her little brother out of the abbey.
Another special aspect of the coronation that concerned Charlotte was the outfit and headpiece she wore, which matched her mother's look. Both Catherine and Charlotte stunned in sparkling floral headpieces designed by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen. Mother and daughter had similar matching updos that were accentuated by the gorgeous head jewelry that mimicked a floral wreath. Catherine's headpiece featured two rows of foliage, while Charlotte's was designed in a single layer.
What's more, Catherine and Charlotte wore similar dresses that were designed by Alexander McQueen, the designer behind Catherine's iconic lace wedding dress. The Prince and Princess of Wales were requested by King Charles III to wear formal robes and mantels for the ceremony. Catherine's outfit featured the colors of the UK flag — blue, red and white — while Charlotte's outfit was all white. The Wales family often dons blue for their family portraits, which brought extra significance to the Princess of Wales' look. Both mother and daughter's stylish outfits featured intricate thread detailing that included rose, daffodil, thistle and shamrock motifs in honor of the nations that make up the United Kingdom — England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, respectively.
Additionally, Catherine sported some exquisite jewelry in a nod to members of the royal family who have passed. Her pearl and diamond earrings once belonged to Diana, her late mother-in-law, while the George VI Festoon Necklace she wore was owned by Queen Elizabeth II. The late queen's father, King George VI requested the piece to be made for his daughter while she was still a princess, and she wore it throughout her 70-year reign.
