It was a long and eventful 2024 for the royal family, with King Charles III and the Princess of Wales facing health challenges. However, Princess Catherine ended the year more hopefully, as she gradually returned to the public eye and official royal duties. Many were happy to see her continue her “Royal Carols: Together at Christmas” tradition for the fourth year.
In September 2024, Catherine shared the great news that after completing chemotherapy treatment, she was finally cancer-free. In addition, Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretary, Ailsa Anderson, said Catherine’s health had improved and she looked better every day. Anderson stated: “Each time we see her, she’s looking better and better.”
After announcing her diagnosis in March 2024, Catherine spent most of the rest of the year away from the public eye, taking a break from royal duties and focusing on her chemotherapy and subsequent recovery.
She has also shared the complexity of the cancer journey and its healing process, saying: “The cancer journey is complex, scary,” and added that her “path to healing and full recovery is long, and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
On Jan. 14, 2025, after a year-long battle with the disease and just days after her birthday, the Princess of Wales expressed her gratitude for being in remission. In a heartfelt message, Catherine thanked the dedicated staff at The Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea, London, who cared for her during her cancer treatment.
The Princess shared this news on her and Prince William’s official Instagram account shortly after visiting the same hospital where she underwent chemotherapy last year. Her unannounced visit marked a significant milestone, as it was her first public acknowledgment of her diagnosis and treatment.
While at The Royal Marsden, Catherine took the opportunity to connect with both staff and patients, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the care she received and reflecting on the challenges she faced during her recovery.
In an exchange with 45-year-old patient Katherine Field, who used a cold cap during chemotherapy to help preserve her hair, Catherine shared insights about her “really tough” experience.
As Catherine gestured to her arm and chest to explain the port used for administering her medication, she recalled: “I got so attached to it,” humorously admitting she felt a pang of hesitation when she was finally told she could “have it taken out.”
In this candid atmosphere, she encouraged patients to maintain a positive outlook and savor the small joys in life. She also spoke about the shock of her diagnosis and the emotional and physical toll of chemotherapy.
Catherine also underscored the importance of self-care, reminding everyone to stay hydrated and soak up some sunlight during their recovery. The Princess said:
“I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.”
Catherine was announced as joint patron of the hospital with Prince William during the visit, and vowed in her message:
“In my new role as Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden, my hope is, that by supporting groundbreaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing, we might save many more lives, and transform the experience of all those impacted by cancer.”
Signing off, the Princess wrote:
“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
