The Princess of Wales, Catherine, is widely known for her poise, charm, and commitment to her royal duties. She is also the patron of several community outreach programs and charities. From championing mental health initiatives to spotlighting early childhood development, Catherine has a remarkable ability to connect with people on a deeply personal level. These are among the reasons she has become the most popular member of the royal family.

Her compassionate nature was once again on display when she offered words of encouragement and advice to patients going through their battle with cancer during a visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital, where she herself was once treated for cancer. Catherine later announced on the Prince and Princess of Wales' official social media account that she had become a joint patron of the hospital. Expressing her gratitude to the hospital for their work during her treatment, Catherine wrote

“I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year.  My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.”

During Princess Catherines visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Jan. 14, 2025, to personally express her gratitude to the staff for their “exceptional care, support and compassion” during the course of her treatment, Catherine also took the time to visit other patients and offer them support through their challenging time.

The Princess of Wales radiated warmth during her first major solo public appearance in over a year. She asked one patient who had started treatment that day how she was finding it. Catherine continued to share words of support and encouragement, providing hope to those battling an illness she also fought. She shared a warm hug with one of the patients and then told them:

“I wanted to come and show my support for the amazing work that's going on here and for those who are going through treatment and having such a hard time. Are you OK? There is light at the end of that tunnel. Very nice to meet you and best of luck. You are in the best of hands.”

She also spoke to several members of staff about her life post-remission, before speaking to one of the patients, Kerr Melia, a man who was diagnosed with gastroesophageal cancer five years ago.

“Youre a strong man,” Princess Catherine told Melia. "I've had a tiny taste of what you've been through, and you've had to keep coming back."

She also shared words of encouragement, saying:

“The resilience you need to get through, first of all, a small taster of what you've gone through…. It's to keep coming back….to be as positive as you are. The treatments are really so different and so varied, it impacts families differently.”
