In a tweet from the palace on Saturday, the news broke that Prince William has been appointed as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

According to the palace's website, this position lasts for a year and is usually bestowed upon those with Scottish descent, however members of the British royal family have occupied the role in the past.

Prince William will attend Church of Scotland general assembly functions, carry out ceremonial duties, and serve as Queen Elizabeth II's representative to the church.

He also has the opportunity to reside at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and invite distinguished guests as is the custom.

The new title comes at a time when his Harry and Meghan Markle have dropped their "royal highness" titles according to USA Today. The publication reports that on January 18, Buckingham Palace stated that they shall only be known as Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and are no longer working members of the Royal Family while Harry does remain in line for the throne at the sixth place.
