Prince George Was A Show-Stopper At King Charles III’s Coronation Ceremony

May 08, 2023

Charles III was finally crowned as king after ascending to the throne last Sep. 8, 2022, the same day her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, passed away. While it is not necessary for a monarch to be crowned in order to become king, the coronation ceremony is a formality and a state occasion. This means that while Charles may offer his views, at the end of the day, full control of the guest list and other details are with the government as it is footing the bill.

The last time a coronation took place was Elizabeth's on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey, the setting for every coronation since 1066. It was also the first time the ceremony had ever been televised. An estimated 27 million people in the United Kingdom and millions more around the world watched as the sixth queen of England was crowned.

In comparison, Charles III's coronation ceremony on May 6, 2023, was much different. From his companion, the pledge of allegiance, and even to the invited guests – the latter's coronation was mirrored by the theme of "modern monarchy" he was trying to put forward ever since. Like his mother's coronation, Charles, as a kid, was present. Observing as his mother takes on the biggest role in her life while unknowingly witnessing what would be his in the future.

Notably, Prince William, the heir apparent, was also present at the coronation, along with his wife, Princess Kate Middleton, and their children. After William, the second person in line is Prince George, and like his father, the young royal had a larger role in his grandfather's coronation, capturing the hearts of many people online. Read on to learn more about Prince George and what he did at the coronation.

Prince George, 9, is not like any other kid in the world – he is most certainly going to be the King of England one day – and this has become more apparent during King Charles III's coronation.

Born George Alexander Louis on Jul. 22, 2013, Prince George is the eldest child of Prince William and Princess Kate. He is also the eldest grandchild of King Charles, which makes him the second line to the British throne, following his father.

He was born at St. Mary's Hospital during the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II and was widely celebrated by people all around the world, including the Commonwealth realms. This was in anticipation of George becoming a king one day.

His siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, attended the coronation ceremony too. Although William's children are all important to the coronation, Louis was not present together with his family during the ceremony and was babysat by a nanny behind the church.

Unlike his grandfather and great-grandmother, who were both present at their parent's respective coronations in 1953 and 1937, respectively, but have only observed back then, George has a more prominent role in King Charles III's coronation.

Prince George was tasked with the responsibility of one of four Pages of Honor attending to the king. He did this alongside Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, Nicholas Barclay, and Ralph Tollemache.

Queen Camilla, on the other hand, was supported by her three grandsons, Gus Lopes, Louis Lopes, and Freddy Parker Bowles, and her great-nephew, Arthur Elliot, the grandson of her sister, Annabel Elliot.

For those who do not know, a Page of Honour is a ceremonial position in the Royal Household, and they require attendance on state occasions. The most notable activity they only do is carrying the long train of the King's or the head royal's robes.

By tradition, Page of Honours wears a white satin waistcoat, white breeches, and a hose, a scarlet frock coat embedded with gold trimmings, coupled with black buckled shoes and ruffles. During Charles III's coronation, Prince George was allowed to wear simple black slacks with gold down the sides, as well as shiny black leather dress shoes, at his request.

According to The Telegraph, Prince George becomes the youngest future king to have an official role in a coronation ceremony, marking the first time in modern royal history that a future monarch was involved in a service. In the photos, George looked incredibly focused, serious, and very composed in undertaking such an important role.

According to Royal Author Hugo Vickers, it was a "lovely idea" for Charles and Camilla to include their own family members in such important roles rather than having other's sons and daughters do it.

"It is all part of the inclusivity of the family and strengthens their bonds," Vickers told The Times. "Bringing George in also sends all the right symbolism for the future and gives him something he will always remember.

An insider told People Magazine that Prince William and Princess Kate are "cognizant" that Prince George is "old enough" to understand what is going on with his family.

"His parents are very excited and delighted that he is a page," the source revealed. "It's something that his parents have thought long and hard about and are very much looking forward to — and I'm sure George is too."
