Aug 15, 2021
Princess Anne is set to celebrate her 71st birthday today on August 15. Since Prince Philip's passing, Princess Anne has been accompanying her mother, the queen, on royal tours, such as one that they did recently this summer in Scotland. As the dynamics in the royal family shift, Princess Anne has proven to be a strong member of the family. To commemorate her 71s birthday today, the Clarence House Instagram page posted a throwback photo of Princess Anne and her older brother Charles from when they were children. In honor of Queen Elizabeth's only daughter turning 71, let's take a look back at some fashionable moments in her life, which show off her impeccable style and grace.
Read on to learn more about the birthday post from Prince Charles, as well as to learn about Princess Anne and her style in honor of her 71st birthday.
Married to Mark Phillips on November 14, 1973, at Westminster Abbey, Princess Anne looked stunning in a classic long-sleeved gown that was very fitting of the era. Described by the BBC as "an embroidered Tudor-style wedding dress with a high collar and medieval sleeves." The dress was topped off by the Queen Mary Diamond Fringe tiara, which was worn by her mother Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day, and also recently by Princess Beatrice on hers.
Following the breakup of her first marriage, Princess Anne was lucky to find love a second time, marrying Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence at Crathie Kirk in Scotland on December 12, 1992. Dressed in a much more understated way for this wedding, Princess Anne looked smart in a mid-sleeved dress and long white gloves accented with gold jewelry.
On July 6, 2018, members of the royal family attended The Thistle Service in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dressed for the occasion, the royals wore traditional velvet robes and white plumed hats. Princess Anne is a member of the Order of the Thistle and looked excellent donning the traditional garments. She matched the deep green of the robe with a light green dress, showing off how her fashion and royal sensibilities can work together.

Princess Anne's style as she was younger was quite in contrast to what she wears today. A young Princess Anne was almost always seen sporting rather androgynous clothing in the form of jodhpurs, a button-up shirt, and a tie. She still looked always very put together and rather sweet, and even sometimes she wore matching outfits with her mother, Queen Elizabeth.
On the morning of her birthday last year in 2020, the Instagram page 'thecrown_uk' released new portraits of the Princess in honor of her birthday. According to the post, the pictures were taken by John Swannell at the Princess's home, Gatcombe Park, in February this year. In one image, Anne is seen smiling subtly, wearing a Sue Palmer emerald green dress and a gold ribbon knot brooch set with 12 diamonds, according to the Daily Mail.
Donning poppy pins for the Festival of Remembrance, held at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2019, Princess Anne looked classy and elegant. The annual festival commemorates all those who have lost their lives in conflict, while the red poppy is a symbol to never forget them. Here, Princess Anne pairs the bright red flower with a somber black ensemble but adds some elegant interest to the look in the form of a black-and-white scarf draped around her neck. She continues the red theme with some red lipstick and completes the look with her signature pearls.
For last year's birthday, just a day before her 70th, the Princess Royal also received two military promotions, as approved by her mother, the queen. According to Royal Central, she was promoted to the rank of general in the Army and air chief marshal in the Air Force. The appointments bring her ranks inline in the Army and Air Force with her rank in the Royal Navy.
The Ministry of Defence stressed that the royal has been "hugely supportive" of the British Armed Forces for a number of years. According to BBC, they said: "This promotion on her 70th birthday recognizes her invaluable contribution and commitment to the military."
This year, Princess Anne's older brother Prince Charles was one of the first of the royals to congratulate the princess for her 71st birthday. Here the two siblings are seen as toddler and baby, as Prince Charles holds his smiling sister's hand. This throwback photo is rare to see, but is always a great way to celebrate a birthday!
