Pregnant Opossum Won't Stop Clinging To The People Who Rescued Her Babies
Jun 05, 2019
Judy Obregon knows a thing or two about rescuing endangered animals. She is the founder of a dog rescue in Fort Worth, Texas and has saved a number of dogs from danger. But in 2016, Judy crossed paths with another animal that could use her help. An Opossum that was pregnant.
Judy assumed the Opossum was already dead when she observed the way it lay motionless on the ground. But the animal suddenly moved its head. She said she could not imagine driving away when an animal was in need.
She knew the first order of business was moving the animal from the street into a safe place. She was able to move the Opossum out of the street and used a shirt to wrap around the animal. She made a quick call to a wildlife rehabilitator named Tabitha in search of help for the Opossum.

Judy found a box for the Opossum while she waited for Tabitha to arrive. Tabitha was able to confirm the Opossum was carrying babies once she was on the scene. She noted Angel, that was the name Judy gave the animal, had not been struck by a car. Tabitha surmised a human had injured the Opossum with a pellet gun or other weapon. Angel's eye was injured and there were broken teeth in her mouth.
The animal was likely struck with a stick or other object after the initial attack.
There was no sign of infection but Angel's rescuers felt it best to give her a round of antibiotics. They were also happy to see the animal was able to eat and drink water shortly after its rescue. Angel carried six babies at the time of her rescue.
Judy cannot imagine the suffering Angel experienced before she found her. She would gladly do it all over again if necessary. The fact Angel is not the typical animal she serves is of no concern to her. Angel is a living soul that did nothing to whoever brought such harm to her.
