Pierce Brosnan And Keely Shaye Smith Share Emotional Tributes On 20th Wedding Anniversary
Aug 12, 2021
“James Bond” actor Pierce Brosnan celebrated his wedding anniversary this August on Instagram after 20 years of marriage to his wife, the journalist Keely Shaye Smith. Throughout their long partnership, Smith has been at her husband’s side through thick and thin since they met back in the 1990s.
The couple has had two children together, 24-year-old Dylan and 20-year-old Paris. Brosnan is also a grandfather of his late daughter Charlotte's children, Isabella, 22, and Lucas, 15, as well as Sean's 6-year-old daughter Marley May.
The lovebirds unexpectedly met in 1994 while Smith was on assignment in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and Brosnan was there for a party. Smith’s interview with Ted Danson fell through, and so she happened to run into Brosnan in the romantic Mexican beach town. Brosnan had lost his first wife, Cassandra Harris, to ovarian cancer three years earlier. Despite the heartbreak that he had suffered, however, Brosnan was able to eventually move on, tying the knot with Smith in his home country, Ireland, in 2001. Since then, their marriage has been a model for Hollywood couples. In spite of all the drama that often surrounds romance in showbusiness — think of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, for example — Brosnan and Smith seem to have found a secret to long-lasting love.
To commemorate their two decades of marriage this year, the “James Bond” actor posted two photos of the couple together — a throwback and a more current one — alongside a heartfelt message to his wife for his more than 1.6 million followers.
“Happy anniversary my darling Keely, my love forever grows with you…☘️❤️” Brosnan wrote.
In response, the 57-year-old Smith commemorated the occasion with a similar message on Instagram: “Still the one! Happy 20th wedding anniversary @piercebrosnanofficial ✨ Thank you for the gift of your love and friendship. The world is more beautiful with you in it! 4-8-94 / 8-4-2001.” Smith posted the tribute with a photo of the couple on their wedding day. Fans of the two also celebrated Smith and Brosnan’s long marriage by commenting hearts.
The 68-year-old has been open about Smith’s supportive role in his life, especially after the actor’s daughter, Charlotte Brosnan, passed away in 2013 at the age of 42 after a battle with ovarian cancer. The Daily Mail reports that following Charlotte’s passing, Brosnan fell into depression. Luckily Smith, whom Brosnan described as “strength I wouldn’t be able to live without,” was there to help him through his darkest days.
But Brosnan wasn’t always married to Smith.
Brosnan’s first wife was Australian actress Cassandra Harris who also starred in Bond films. According to the Daily Mail , the couple had two children and was married for over a decade until Harris tragically died of ovarian cancer in 1991, the same disease that would take her daughter’s life.
“Cassie was very positive about life. I mean, she had the most amazing energy and outlook on life. It was and is a terrible loss and I see it reflected from time to time in my children,” Brosnan told Express in 2013.
“It was a great friendship, a great love, a great adventure. You don’t get over the mourning in a year, two years, three, four. You just miss the person and sometimes get angry with her because she’s not there,” he added.

But despite Brosnan’s tragic family history, his story has a rather happy ending. A decade after his wife’s death, he found love again, marrying Smith in 2001 at Ballintubber Abbey in his native Ireland, according to reporters at the Daily Mail.
That was seven years after the two first met in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
“He was captivating,” Smith told People Magazine of the encounter in 2001. “Tall, dark and handsome — everything that everybody would immediately be attracted to. He had this mischievous sparkle in his eyes. I thought, ‘Wow! Wow!'”
Brosnan seems to have felt similarly, as he told People that he “found a great woman in Keely Shaye.” “Not if I searched a million times over would I find one as good,” he added.
In other Brosnan news, the actor announced in July 2021 on Instagram that he would have his first art show in Los Angeles by the end of the year.
Brosnan’s post received an outpouring of praise from fans, colleagues and fellow stars. And since the announcement was posted, it has received more than 155,000 likes for the actor/producer/painter.
Back in 2018, the former Bond actor auctioned off his painting of Bob Dylan for $1.4 million. Rather than pocketing the money, Brosnan donated the piece to the 25th annual gala amFAR Cannes charity event, with the $1.4 million going to Cinema Against AIDS.
No wonder Smith fell in love with Brosnan. Not only is he James Bond, he’s also a talented painter and philanthropist!
