For nearly four decades, actor Patrick Dempsey has graced our screens in a career that many can only dream of. Of course, most fans know him as the swoon-worthy neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on the hit medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy,” opposite Ellen Pompeo. The Hollywood star, 58, made his debut in 1987 in the romantic comedy “In The Mood.” Since then, he has starred in films such as “Made of Honor,” “Valentine’s Day” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” The multitalented star has also appeared on Broadway and in several TV productions, including his role as a young John F. Kennedy in the mini-series, “JFK: Reckless Youth.”
Dempsey has always been one of Hollywood’s heartthrobs and was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2023. The actor was first married to late actress and producer Rocky Parker until their divorce in 1994. He then found love with actress Jillian Fink, with whom he shares three children - daughter Talula Fyfe Dempsey and twin sons Darby Galen Dempsey and Sullivan Patrick Dempsey. The actor took the drama offscreen in 2015 when he suddenly announced his departure from Grey’s Anatomy after ten years on the show, but amazingly reprised his role for a few episodes during the pandemic.
While many fans were heartbroken since he quit the show at the prime of his character, he has taken several opportunities to offer clarity on his decision. The actor has gotten candid with multiple media outlets, opening up about his love for acting, his surprising career turn to race car driving and the love of his life: his wife Jillian - who was also the reason behind his sudden departure from the hit TV series.
Patrick Dempsey and Jillian Fink’s marriage is a lesson in romance, resilience and commitment. The actor has been married to his wife for twenty-five years - a lifetime in Hollywood years! He can be seen on Instagram gushing about his wife to millions of followers, such as in his dedication to her on their anniversary.
“The love of my life, I’m truly grateful for all that you do and who you are. You’re an incredible mother, wife, friend and partner.”
However, their road to achieving relationship goals has not always been smooth sailing. Still, they have persevered through the dark times and come out on the other side. While fans love him for his acting and his killer looks, Jillian has been by his side through life’s changes ever since they tied the knot in 1999. Dempsey’s decision to leave Grey’s Anatomy in 2015 sent shock waves through the millions of people who had been glued to their screens ever since the series first aired in 2005. Commenting on the public outcry, Dempsey said,
“I’m very grateful for Grey’s Anatomy. It’s given me the opportunity to do everything. But at the same time, there was a cost.”
By this, he was referring of course to the near breakdown of his marriage to Fink. Behind the screens of the global success of Grey’s Anatomy, Dempsey didn’t get to spend as much time with his family. This was one of the main reasons for his departure from the show.
In 2015, Fink filed for divorce from the actor just as he had begun to pursue a career in motor racing in addition to his work on the TV series. In the statement, the couple announced,
“It is with careful consideration and mutual respect that we have decided to end our marriage.”
However, this hurdle proved surmountable to the couple, who reunited just a year later. That meant that the actor had to take a step back from the autosport world as well, but he has since recently returned to his other passion.
Today, the actor balances a seasoned career, a beautiful wife, a loving family and his passion for racing. He shares all this with his beloved fans on Instagram. He does not take this fulfilling life and the comeback his marriage made for granted, telling PEOPLE,
“Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of. I didn’t feel like we had done all the work. And we both wanted to do that work. That’s where it started.”
