Orphaned Baby Walrus Meets Caregiver And Wants To Cuddle
Apr 27, 2020
Fishermen noticed a lone baby walrus in Barrow, Alaska and contacted the Alaska SeaLife Center to help the young calf. When the baby walrus got to know its new caretakers, all it wanted to do was snuggle.
Young walruses usually stay with their mother for about two years before they’re able to fend for themselves. When the baby walrus was found, it was only 4 to 6 weeks old and way too young to be without his mother. Luckily the local fishermen were aware of that and called the Alaska SeaLife Center for help.

The Alaska SeaLife Center is located in Seward, Alaska. The nonprofit is not only a public aquarium with a marine research and education center but also the state’s only permanent marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation facility, as stated on their website. Therefore they were happy to take in a baby walrus in need.
The staff at the Alaska SeaLife Center were aware that the young calf needed lots of love and attention as walruses are incredibly social animals. They knew they had to step in as the baby walrus’ caregivers in order for the little one to survive.
Below you can witness the heart-warming moment when the calf first met his new family:
