Dec 25, 2020
The bond between a mother and her son is one that is often demonstrated in the mother-son dance at the son's wedding. Gabe Helguera and his mother Susan certainly did not let their guests down with their dancing, where they wowed the crowd with some unexpected moves. Luckily for us, Gabe Helguera did the honors of uploading the fun dance video to Youtube back in 2014.

What’s a wedding without any dancing?
No wedding is complete without dances that light the floor on fire. The wonderful thing is that everyone at a wedding will dance, from the newlyweds to their parents, and guests. At this very special wedding, you can see the incredibly exciting dance of the young groom and his no less energetic mother.
The father-daughter dance during the daughter’s wedding day is a tender moment shared between her and her dad. Similarly, the mother-son dance between the mom and the groom is a great way for the son to show gratitude and honor the person who made it all possible in the first place. There is no doubt that father-daughter dances are way more common than mother and son ones, (it’s even proven by the fact that the former has a Wikipedia page about it but not the latter), but one mother and son duo show just why more weddings should have them.
When Gabe and his mom, Susan, first hit the floor, it was to a traditional song, which shortly transitioned into one with more of a beat and wilder moves, which clued their guests in on the fact that this was no conventional mother and son dance. The pair had their guests cheering in delight with their skills and enthusiasm.
They chose the perfect songs for their routine
To start, mother and son began their dance with Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World. Then, the song was interrupted and replaced with Michael Jackson's Billy Jean, a song that has a tempo that’s very obviously faster than What a Wonderful World. The crowd was astonished and entertained by the pair's slick dance moves, accentuated by a sweet backflip by Gabe.

To wrap things up, the pair danced to Single Ladies by Beyonce, and the moves and attitude really came out. Both mother and son graciously received the cheers, whoops, and hollers by their new fans as they gave each other a huge hug. Guests are seen in the background of the video clearly entertained by the unique dance.
A fun and priceless way to make special memories for an important day
“This is the best mother-son dance in the history of the universe,” wrote Gabe in the description of his video. And you know what, he’s probably right.
Dances like these are such a fun way for a mother and son to mix things up while also demonstrating their close and unique bond. The best part about this dance was neither party was too focused on executing the steps or overly showy, just purely having fun.
You would think that because Gabe seemed more confident with the dance moves that the whole dance was his idea in the first place, but it was not. “For the record: this was all my Mom’s (Susan’s) idea,” Gabe said in the video description. They both seemed comfortable, and it is likely that they had a blast putting this compilation together and rehearsing their dance.
And although mom missed a few steps, (probably because of the nerves) she brought out the liveliness in the room. All the small flaws and mistakes, which nobody really cared about anyway, are compensated by the excellent mood of the dancers and their positive emotions. Mom clearly enjoys what is happening and puts her soul into the movements. She demonstrates energy and charisma, thus captivating the guests. You just know that Gabe and Susan will cherish that time spent together for the rest of their lives.
He is the drummer for two-time Grammy award-nominated band, I Prevail
Gabe’s incredible sense of rhythm is not too surprising once you realize that he is a professional drummer. In fact, Gabe’s band, I Prevail, has been nominated two times for the Grammys, one for their single Bow Down which was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2019, and then their album, Trauma, for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in the same year. According to the band’s Wikipedia page, Gabe, who is now 28 years old, has been their drummer since 2017. He is also a drums teacher, and provides online lessons via his company, Drum Beats Online.
Everyone loved it
Since its posting in October 2014, the video of Gabe and his mom dancing at his wedding has garnered over a whopping 14.5 million views and over 58,000 likes.
“Mom's such a sport, celebrating a momentous time with her son, and not missing a step. Congrats to all!” one viewer wrote in the comments section of the video on YouTube. “You know you got a good man when he gets down with his mom on the dance floor,” wrote one person named Denise Cannon, whose comment got 74 likes.
Many wrote about how lucky Gabe’s mom is for him to want to share this special moment with her. “I love it!” one of the top comments, with over 400 likes, read. “Mom, you are so lucky that your son loves you so much that he wanted to share his wedding moment with you!” And he really does love her, as evidenced by the "I love my mom" that he added in the video description.
Gabe is very blessed indeed. His mom took an active part in organizing the wedding and was not afraid to dance in front of everyone. Gabe’s bride, Lane, is really fortunate as well because not everyone gets such a cool mother-in-law. According to Gabe’s Instagram, he and his now-wife first met when they were just 13 years old and got engaged one day after Valentine’s Day in 2014.
Weddings are always a memorable occasion, but the guests at Gabe and his bride's wedding are sure to remember this dance every time they think about their time spent celebrating. What was your favorite part of the dance? Gabe's backflip, or maybe how much his mom sassed it up during Single Ladies?
