One of the most nerve racking experiences a vet can have is when an orangutan mother reunites with her newborn baby that was taken from her. Would she willingly take her baby back or would she refuse the baby?
In a series called Orangutan Jungle School, it highlights the process of reunited mothers with their babies before sending them back to the wild. Clara, a mother orangutan, and her newborn baby, Clarita, were in the forest on Borneo Island when they were separated by a dominant male orangutan. Clara was extremely distressed and alone when she was brought to the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rescue Centre.
Clarita was later found. They had been separated for a week. It was important that they were reunited as soon as possible to prevent developmental problems.Clarita was in need of her mother’s milk. The staff knew that, however they didn’t know if Clara would take her daughter back after being handled by humans. They didn’t know how she would react.
A staff member expressed their concerns. They knew the mother could reject the baby if she thought she smelled different than what she smelled like before.Ursula, one of the staff members, nervously held up Clarita to Clara. All of the staff held their breath. Ursula reintroduced them and spoke in soft tones. She told Clara that Clarita was her baby.
