Mom Surprises Hospital After Giving Birth To 13lb Baby Girl Who Wasn't Even At Full-Term

Jun 10, 2022

The birth of a baby is an exciting time for any family. According to UNICEF, around 386,000 babies are born each day around the world. An Australian newborn has created even more excitement than usual. The way that this sweet baby girl came into the world caused the internet to react in a large way. The Australian baby is making a  huge impact because of the way she made her “big” entrance into the world weighing 13 pounds. In this story from October 2019, one woman named Emma Millar gave birth to a larger-than-life baby girl called Remi.

According to The Mirror, Emma Millar gave birth to her daughter, Remi Frances Millar, at Wollongong Hospital just outside of Sydney Australia. She and her husband, Daniel, knew that their newborn daughter would be larger than normal when her 35-week ultrasound calculated that their daughter already weighed almost 9 pounds. That was already heavier than the average full-term newborn weight of 7.27 pounds.

Because Emma had gestational diabetes, she and her husband were told that their baby would be larger than average. When Remi’s two-year-old sister Willow was born, she weighed just over 12 pounds. Emma and Daniel's oldest child, a son, was also born slightly overweight as well. But because Remi was born two weeks before her due date, her weight was still a bit of a surprise. On average, only about 1 percent of newborns weigh more than 9.92 pounds. Despite mom Emma giving birth to three very heafty babies, the family is healthy and happy.

Before Emma gave birth to Remi, her 35 week ultrasound showed that the baby was developing at a weight slightly higher than normal. At the check-up, Remi weighed 8.81 pounds which was above normal but no one expected the baby to keep growing. However, to their surprise, that was not the case on her birthday.

In an interview with Illawarra Mercury, the family shared their surprise. "At 35 weeks an ultrasound revealed she was about 4kg but we didn't think she'd grow that much more," Emma said

"Doctors everywhere 'quick, quick, grab the scale, grab the scale, put her on, put her on, lets see how big she is' they were blown away," shared Remi's dad, Daniel Millar.

"She's like a mini sumo wrestler," her mom said. Being born at nearly 13 pounds, Remi although so cute, does appear to be physically bigger than most babies. However, Emma and Daniel say that her older siblings love her regardless.

"Our other children just adore Remi, who is really healthy and content and just thriving," Emma shared with the Daily Mail. According to the Daily Mail, staff at the Wollongong Hospital shared that Remi was most likely the biggest baby they had delivered at the hospital. Daniel, Remi's dad, admitted that while they were there the young girl was quite the spectacle.

"When I've walked around with her there's always a crowd of people - midwives, other new parents and visitors - around her, asking about her size because she's so much bigger than all the other newborns," he shared.

"I don't think I could have handled a natural birth with her," Remi's mom shared. She said that after having two other babies who were above normal that she was used to delivering by having a C-section delivery.

"I had an emergency cesarean with my son and after that elected to have caesars as it was safest for me and my babies," the mom opened up and shared

"It ended up being an emergency caesar again with Remi though because my waters broke early," she said. "I don't think I could have handled a natural birth with her," she admitted. The mom of three also shared that Remi was at max capacity with her weight in terms of how the birth would go. "She's about the limit I've been told," she said. When the couple left the hospital with their third and heaviest newborn baby, Remi, they shared they hardly had any new clothes that fit her.

We had many little outfits in size 0000 but she's actually a 00," Emma said. "We only had one outfit that actually fitted her on Monday," the mom of three admitted

With the Millar's all having larger than normal babies, Daniel said that they have grown out of their baby weight just as they expected. "Willow was a big girl too," he said, "but she's stick thin now so it evens itself out," he added

We hope that the whole family is doing well after delivering such above-average babies, and we also hope that the whole family has an above average life considering the "big" way that their children came into the world!
