Meghan Markle Expecting Second Child With Husband Prince Harry

Feb 15, 2021

Congratulations are in order for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle! The couple announced that they are expecting baby number 2 in a beautiful post of a black and white photograph on Sunday, February 14. Markle had heartbreakingly revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage last July, so this news comes as a very happy event in the couple’s lives. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their senior royal duties last January as well to give themselves a chance at a more normal life. They currently reside in California with their son Archie.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ecstatic to welcome a second baby into their family! They confirmed the news with a beautiful black-and-white photograph of the couple in a garden, taken by their friend and longtime photographer, Misan Harriman as per People Magazine. In the photograph, Markle cradles her baby bump as she lies on Prince Harry’s lap, who is sitting up barefoot and beaming at his wife.

A spokesperson also confirmed the news to People, “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.” This news comes exactly 37 years after Princess Diana announced that she was expecting Prince Harry with Prince Charles. The baby will be Prince Charles's fifth grandchild, and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's 12th great-grandchild. Moreover, the baby will be eighth in line to the throne even if they become an American citizen following birth.

Reacting to the news, Buckingham Palace released the following statement on Sunday, February 14, “Her Majesty, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and entire family are ‘delighted’ and wish them well.” No other details have officially been released from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, yet but this is not surprising as they had also previously kept the sex of baby Archie a secret till he was born. Prince William and Kate Middleton have done the same with all three of their children.

Speaking to Us Weekly, a source close to the couple said that this is “a dream come true” for the couple. “Meghan fell pregnant again toward the end of last year. The baby is due at the end of spring,” added the source. "Harry and Meghan have always wanted a couple of kids — a little brother or sister for Archie, and they’re excitedly planning for the arrival of their bundle of joy."

Another source added that Prince Harry is “delighted” to become a father again. “He loves being a father and his friends say he has been beaming with pride when they shared the news with [them].” The insider added that for Prince Harry, fatherhood “is the best feeling in the world … and can’t wait to do it all over again.”

Markle spoke out about suffering a devastating miscarriage in July, which she opened up about in an op-ed piece in the New York Times in November 2020. “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” she wrote. “We have learned that when people ask how any of us are doing, and when they really listen to the answer, with an open heart and mind, the load of grief often becomes lighter — for all of us. In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing.”

Us Weekly reported that a source close to the couple said that the loss was "devastating" for the couple, but ultimately it has strengthened their relationship. "They still struggle to even think about it, but have supported each other through the agony. In many ways, the loss has brought them closer together and made them stronger,” they elaborated. Markle intended "to encourage others to not suffer in silence" by sharing her experience, and her speaking out certainly made an impact on many.

Prince Harry and Markle wed on May 19, 2018, in a lavish ceremony at St.George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. They announced their first pregnancy in October 2018, and welcomed their son, Archie, in May 2019. Speaking of her newborn son at the time, Markle said “He’s really calm. He’s been the dream, so it’s been a special couple of days. It’s pretty amazing and I have the two best guys in the world, so I’m really happy.”

The couple announced that they would be stepping back from senior royal duties in January 2020, which was met with shock by the royal family as well as around the world as this was an unprecedented move for any member of the royal family in modern history.

In an Instagram post, the couple wrote "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment."

The couple intended to spend time between North America and the United Kingdom following their move to California in mid-March, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, they have not been able to visit the UK due to travel restrictions. However, Prince Harry has kept in touch with his family over video calls and remains especially close to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, as per Elle. Speaking to People Magazine, a Royal Insider said "Despite everything that has been going on this year, they don’t regret their move to the U.S. They love that they are able to focus on projects and causes that are important to them."

This isn't the first happy news for the royal family. Earlier this month, Princess Eugenie announced in an Instagram post that she welcomed her first child, a boy, with her husband Jack Brooksbank. With so much good news currently, we are sure that the Queen is overjoyed! We wish Meghan Markle and Prince Harry the very best!
