Man Who Was Never Approved By His Girlfriend’s Late Mother Proposes At Her Funeral
Sep 25, 2023
Marriage proposals are wonderful events that often hold sweet memories, and for this, lovers try to make the most of it. Some individuals even go the extra mile of setting up grand props to pop the big question or even make it a destination proposal. However, this was not the case for Reddit user Prestigious-Arm-989, who came under fire for how he chose to propose to his girlfriend.
The original poster (OP) took to the AITA community in 2022 to share the story of how his proposal to his girlfriend turned sour. The Redditor revealed how he proposed to his girlfriend at her mother's funeral, noting that he thought it was the perfect occasion. However, other internet users had a differing opinion.
The young man, 25, proposed to his girlfriend of two years, 20, at the wake of her mother's funeral. OP wrote:
"i had been planning on proposing to her for quite sometime now and i could never really figure out what the right time really was. no matter where we went together, the ring i bought was always in my pocket in hopes that the right moment would just happen, it never did and i think that was because i knew how her mother felt towards me."
OP continued by revealing that his girlfriend only had her mom since her dad left them when she was little. Therefore, her mom was super protective of her daughter. However, his girlfriend's mom's overprotective nature escalated when she found out that OP "was dating her daughter as she recently turned 18 at the time and I was 23."
OP continued, “it was obvious that her mother didn't approve of me due to our small age gap and she had never kept her dislike for me a secret, so there was no way in hell that she would end up approving us getting married."
The girl’s mom fell ill, leading up to her demise. The poster revealed that she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, such that it was imminent she might not survive the treatment. She chose "to forgo treatment, so she decided to just spend her last couple of week of life with her family before she kicked the bucket. and she just so happened to finally kick it about two weeks ago, her funeral having been yesterday."
OP noted that amid her funeral, he got the inkling to ask her daughter to marry him. He explained, "whenever I was standing over the casket with my girlfriend hanging onto my arm, i looked down at her dead mother and thought to myself "this is it, i'm gonna ask her today."
However, OP confessed that as he wrote this story and reflected on his actions, he might not have made the best decision. He continued by explaining, "but that's what I thought and let myself wait until we weren't still in direct presence of her moms dead body, so i waited patiently until we got to the wake that was at our house."
OP continued to reveal how the proposal went. He revealed: "a couple hours into the wake, i finally took my girlfriend aside and said my prepared speech that was in my head since the moment that i decided i wanted her to be my wife, then i got down on one knee and asked if she wanted to marry me."

The Redditor's girlfriend's response was not one he expected after he asked her to marry him. His girlfriend replied, "Are you f**king tone deaf?" OP was confused by her reply. However, he wrote:
"i guess i can see how i would be the a**hole due to the dirt still being fresh but honestly i couldn't see a better moment than right then because we were finally free of her mothers judgement and able to be together without her moms opinions on the matter."
Redditors immediately replied to OP's story and slammed his decision. Someone wrote, "So, he proposed to her as a f**k you to her dead mother? ARE YOU F**KING KIDDING ME?" One person commented, "I refuse to believe this is real. No one is actually this insensitive."
Another person mentioned, "'Dirt was fresh' .... what kind of demented person talks about his beloved's mother like this whether he liked her or not. Absolute psychopath. Girl, run." One person expressed, "this can't be real even someone with a room temperature IQ would know a funeral is the worst possible place to propose." Another commented, "It's so funny that he thinks he still has a girlfriend. Guarantee that she wants nothing to do with him anymore. Honestly unforgivable."
Someone mentioned, "He's unintentionally NTA to the mother because his stupidity most likely ended the relationship. He gave her daughter a chance to see what she saw in him the whole time; a heartless loser." Someone else affirmed, "Jesus Christ. The girlfriend is right, he IS tone deaf, and I hope she packs her bags and leaves this d**che."
The majority of Reddit users concurred that his behavior was extremely inappropriate and unsuitable for the circumstances.
