Jul 31, 2023
Just weeks ahead of the start of her Celebration Tour, Madonna was rushed to a hospital in New York City and placed in its intensive care unit (ICU) on June 24, 2023.
According to her long-time manager Guy Oseary, the Queen of Pop suffered a “serious bacterial infection which lead (sic) to a several day stay in the ICU.” He added while her “health is improving,” she remains “under medical care.”
“A full recovery is expected,” he added. Oseary did not elaborate on what kind of bacterial infection Madonna was suffering from. According to The Cleveland Clinic, bacterial infections can “affect your skin, lungs, brain, blood and other parts of your body.” The most common bacterial diseases include urinary tract infections, food poisoning, sexually transmitted infections and skin, sinus and ear infections. Such infections are usually treated with antibiotics.
Due to the serious nature of her illness, however, Oseary stated that the start of her tour would be postponed.
“At this time, we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour,” he told fans and added that their team would share more details about the amended tour dates and rescheduled shows in due time.
Thankfully, after a few weeks, Madonna was out of the woods on July 10, 2023. However, some of her fans are still worried about her condition. On July 28, 2023, Madonna posted a video of her dancing again, reassuring everyone that she regained her full energy and health after the worrying health scare. At the time when Madonna was still in the hospital, music sources told People Magazine that illness came about after she “ignored some symptoms of illness for quite a while because she thought they would go away.”
"She was rundown and not feeling 100 percent for a while in anticipation of her tour. She is relentless in her quest to be the best, to wow her fans and to do what others before her have not done," the source added. Another insider told the publication that the 64-year-old singer was pushing herself “beyond the limit.”
On July 10, 2023, Madonna addressed her fans for the very first time since her trip to the emergency room. She said this on Instagram:
“I have felt your love. I'm on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life," she said. "My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappointment anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn't want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”
Madonna then assured her fans that her focus now is her health and getting stronger. As for her postponed "The Celebration" Tour, she said that the plan was to reschedule the American leg sometime in 2024 and continue first in Europe in 2023.
Since then, Madonna has not posted much on her Instagram. On July 19, 2023, she posted a rather cryptic photo of her holding a bouquet of roses.
“‘A single rose can be my garden. A single friend my world.’ ♥️🌹 Thank You,” she wrote in the caption.
